Hi all I am new here and I am seeking help regarding a Monington & Weston baby grand piano serial number 59320 made in 1938. The piano was a gift to my grandmother from James Mason the actor. I am hoping someone here can help me, I am trying to find Monington & Weston's records so that I can prove the provenance of the piano. If anyone here can help me I would be most grateful.

You might try the library in London to see if they have any records.

As many libraries in London as it takes to see who might know about the company.

Have you considered contacting Diana de Rosso, his friend and biographer? Being in the same social circles, as apparently was your grandmother, she might offer some insight.

That’s a nice idea but http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1424544/Diana-de-Rosso.html I am trying to contact the Mason family direct but James' estate is in a bit of a bind. Thank you anyway.

Thanks to everyone who has replied if anyone has any more ideas I would be grateful for any help.

I seem to remember that there was a company about to resurrect the brand in 1996.They may have some records. The last contact I have from them is this address:
34 Engate Street, Lewisham London SE13 7HA England

I know it's off the point, but got to say I loved James Mason! His work in Salem's Lot was awesome and still gives me chills when I see it to this day wink He was a very unique, and very good, actor.

Good luck on your research!

There must be a few fan clubs around. That's where you might find some special interest in the piano.

My grandmother was Dorothy Sinclair and she worked on The Seventh Veil with James. The piano will probably go to Bonhams along with the only recording (the only disks) of Benjamin Britten playing his piano concerto at the first performance in 1938 and conducted by Henry Wood. Bonhams have regular entertainment memorabilia auctions so it's the best place I can think of to find two people who may want the piano. I am looking for fan clubs related to James Mason but I have not had any luck yet but you never know. Thanks to everyone here, I'll keep you posted as to what happens with the piano.
