Has anyone read Alan Rusbridger's "Play it again"?
It is supposed to be the (real) story of an amateur pianist and busy journalist(editor at The Guardian I believe) who set out to learn and perform Chopin's Ballade No1 in one year. The book received had good reviews but I have not seen it around yet.
You can find a review here

Based on the Amazon US and UK sites, it looks like it was released in the UK in January, but won't be released until Sept. 17 in the US.

I'd rather play badly than not at all...

Deborah,

"Playing The Piano For Pleasure" is out of print, but if one can find it in a used book store, it is excellent. Cooke not only provides great practice techniques and repertoire suggestions, but makes one feel like practicing and playing for others is so much fun. It is 3heartsvery positive and encouraging writing for us sometimes timid or reluctant amateur pianists.

Yes! -- and actually available on Amazon (although not real cheap) and there's also a kindle edition.

"The Ivory Trade: Music and the Business of Music at the Van Cliburn Competition" by Joseph Horowitz is a fascinating behind the scenes look at the 1989 Cliburn Competition.

"Me of All People: Alfred Brendel in Conversation with Martin Meyer." Terrifically interesting, this is a series of interviews with Brendel.

"Musical Thoughts and Afterthoughts," Alfred Brendel.

"Virtuosi: A Defense and a (Sometimes Erotic) Celebration of Great Pianists" by Mark Mitchell is an interesting, but highly opinionated and often catty look at what this particular author has deemed the virtuoso pianists. (He's not an Alfred Brendel fan.)

"Music at the Limits" by Edward Said. Said was the music critic for the New Republic and this is a collection of columns/articles he wrote for various publications; all are interesting; not all are piano-specific but many are.

"Musical Elaborations" by Edward Said.

"Evenings with Horowitz: A Personal Portrait" by David Dubal.

"Piano Pieces" by Russell Sherman.

"The Loser" by Thomas Bernhard is a novel with Glenn Gould as one of its characters.

And I'll echo a few others that have been mentioned:

I thoroughly enjoyed Leon Fleisher's memoir "My Nine Lives." In between chapters about his life, Fleisher inserts "Master Classes" where he talks about some of his favorite piano works and how he plays them.

Reading that inspired me to read Fleisher's teacher, Artur Schnabel's memoir, "My Life and Music."

"Chopin: The Reluctant Romantic" by Jeremy Siepmann is not only an excellent bio of Chopin, but it concludes with brief interviews with a whole slew of big name pianists talking about Chopin's music, how they play it and why.

"The Rest is Noise" by Alex Ross is a terrific read.

"My Life with the Great Pianists" by Mohr has interesting personal details about Horowitz in particular.

Might it be a better idea to create a document and post the link to the edited document instead of reposting the entire list of books? It makes the thread quite hard to read. smile

No you don't. Let another site host it, or take it off the Internet, and insert that directly into your post, like so:

Adding on "Alice's Piano - The Life of Alice Herz-Sommer." It's a biography written about Alice Herz-Sommer, the oldest living Holocaust survivor. She's an accomplished pianist that was sent to Theresienstadt, which was being used as a propaganda camp. She performed in at least 100 concerts while being held there. (Frank Baxter recently created this thread about her documentary.)
