Alkan wrote a Concerto for Piano Solo, Opus 39 Nos. 8, 9 and 10.

Chopin wrote a Concert Allegro Op. 46, which would have been the first movement of either a third piano concerto or a concerto for two pianos.

Bach transcribed several concertos by other composers for solo instrument. Other composers did the same.

W. F. Bach and Stravinsky each wrote a concerto for two pianos solo. Liszt wrote a Concerto Pathetique.

Chausson wrote a concerto for piano, violin and string quartet. De Falla wrote a concerto for harpsichord and 5 solo instruments.

There are lot of others.

As someone else said, Alkan's Concerto. This is a very special piece, and I envy you if you've never heard it up to this point and are about to give it a listen!

Completely Off-Thread Department:

The 1958 Hoffnung Interplanetary Music Festival included an hilarious Concerto for Conductor and Orchestra (i.e. no instrumental soloist).

A perennially hopeful amateur!

Persichetti wrote a terrific Concerto for Piano 4-hands that has no orchestra.

Beat me to the chase: Finnissy's solo piano concerti are amazing! I'm not too familiar with the Sorabji, but I remember that my inital exposure to the work was very positive...

Having returned to this thread several times, I am rather surprised that no one has yet mentioned Shostakovich's delightful Concertino for two pianos in A minor. Its date -1953- would certainly indicate who Shostakovich wrote it for.

There are also the 6 Concertos for 2 organs by Antonio Soler.

Concerto for Piano, Clarinet, and string quartet by Harris.
