Since the beginning of the R.Kassman Franz Liszt Trivia Game on the R.Kassman Pianos blog some time earlier this year, I've gotten to know more than I thought possible about the love affairs of Liszt and his buddy Wagner. It seems that relationship or marital status was of no matter to the seeming endless flow of women in, especially, Liszt's life. These guys were the rock stars of their time, without a doubt.

And who would have thought there would be so many children born out of wedlock for both Liszt and Wagner? This includes Wagner's wife Cosima, who was actually the illicit daughter of Lizst, born out of wedlock to one of Liszt's mistresses (who bore him 3 children before they actually married). Wagner was over 22 years Cosmia's senior too! What a tangled web...

I guess I was under the faulty illusion that "in those days" people had higher ideals than we have today. Boy, was I ever wrong!

No worries about Liszt. The Pope was a big fan and visited him during his two years of isolation at an Italian monastery. I'm sure all was forgiven. grin

To the OP: You need to watch the movie "Impromptu." It is the story of Chopin and George Sand, and Liszt and the Countess. It is also a story of how artists such as these (and others, such as Alfred de Musset) lived their uninhibited lives and earned their livings (or at least avoided starvation).

Anyway, it is an amazing movie. It stars a very young Hugh Grant (Chopin) and Judy Davis (George), Julian Sand (I think, as Liszt) and Bernadette Peters (the Countess).

HIGHLY recommended.

And by the way, you know all those nephews that the Popes and cardinals were always providing with jobs throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance. . . .??? I mean, there we are.

There are no illicit children, only illicit parents!

Thanks for the movie recommendation. I'll be sure to watch it and give my review, for all that's worth!

Good idea..now to figure out how to "repost" a thread. I'm obviously new to this.

Just copy the text of your original post and paste it into a new thread in the Pianist Corner. grin

Certainly their activities went well beyond piano playing, painting, and poetry!
