I think this is a better place to post my thoughts.

The work is fine, but her impro seems (sounds) to be based on well known ideas, paths, passages, phrases and scales. It seems so... normal compared to the initial work which had a modal flavor... :-/ Am I right to assume that?

Nikolas,

I think the improvisation is quite appropriate. I don't agree that it is too normal and I don't see how what it is is a negative thing. Sorry you didn't like it.

First of all I'm a classical musician, so certainly not appropriate to discuss in this forum (meaning that I probably don't know my head from my bottom! :D)...

Perhaps I'm not being clear.

I think that her impro was not appropriate, because she went into a different territory in terms of scale and aesthetics, once she got there. Her work had some beautiful moments, but the improvisation seemed to be something that others would also do (in terms that it did sounds a bit too 'straight' (sorry for the lack of words).

I found the whole work rather fascinating, and being exactly the classical musician that I am, I do get constantly tired of people playing the same old stuff (perhaps that's why I became a composer).

Anyhow thanks for posting, J+... I hope I didn't insult anyone... :-/

She is amazing. She has everything in her music--great time, virtuosic chops, a sense of melody and harmony that spans Oscar to Chick, Herbie and Keith, and all the creativity in the world. She IS a genius. Thanks for posting this--it makes me want to PLAY!

does anyone have an idea as to what is happening rhythmically/meter-wise? Gosh it's a challenge just to figure things out.. I hear like 4 distinct parts in this piece, and it amazes when people can play like that.

EDIT: I was totally wrong about my analysis. A friend of mine gave me a brief analysis of the rhythm.. and after hearing it slowed down, it sounds like its in 7. feel free to pm me if you want to see what my friend showed me.

Nikolas,

How about this composition and improvisation, it's less normal:
