This morning I woke up to an email from amavis@pianoworld.com
In theory no one should be able to send me an email from piano world, except admins, as my email doesn't show in my profile.
This email was empty (I checked it on my phone not the computer) - no subject line info.
There is no user called amavis on piano world as far as I can tell - I am reporting to the admins - but am wondering if anyone else got a similar email?

I did get a strange email, though not obviously from Piano World. The sender identified himself as a 'fellow piano tech' which is strange because I am not a 'piano tech' and besides the very term is American. He was interested in doing a house swap for a holiday. Sounded entirely genuine, but I didn't reply.

Most likely it's just a spammer that included fake return address. I would check the relay information in the header of this mail...

Curious what the e-mail said. You don't, by chance, use this product, do you? http://amavis.sourceforge.net/

I got the exact same blank email (no subject) from amavis@pianoworld.com on the 6th March. You can trace the IP from where it was sent which will give you "mail.pianoworld.com". So it came from here.
It may be unrelated but I got it the morning Ed was banned. If it was a moderator message would probably get it via PM. I think, because I haven't received a moderator message before.
Theories?

Folks, please don't go opening ANY emails that are not from trusted sources OR that have blank headers. Just delete them. Spammers and scammers will hack unprotected email accounts as a matter of course, they then have access to all the email addys held in that account, which of course in some of our cases will include any emails to or from PW members. (or anyone else you have sent or received emails from or to)
There has been a recent spate of this "phishing" activity on a few other large forums, some where full membership costs a yearly subscription and where non-full members cannot see the full members email addresses, unlike this site where anyone who joins has access to some folks email addresses.
If you are not certain who an email is from, dont open, just delete.

Possibly. That may be installed in this site. Don't know why it would send blank emails though. The email I received was definitely blank because when you read the source which will have info for "to" "from" "subject" and the servers it passes through, but there is no "body", therefore blank.

If it is not an administrator, it is probably a hacker...

hmmm. Well, I opened it on my cell phone, and then when I was on the computer I just trashed it.
I'd say it was a hacker - and irritating.
I'm very cautious about opening anything that has no subject or that has attachments - ESPECIALLY if I don't recognize the sender. I'd rather just delete and risk missing something - it if is important whoever sent it will re-contact me (properly!)
I think there should be a special circle of heck reserved for those who write viruses and trojans and the like.

I think it makes more sense that it's some misconfiguration with software than a hacker. There doesn't have to be a user on this forum to correspond with an email account for the pianoworld.com domain.
