I get lots of complaints of how noisy my roland is when I play with headphones on.My partner describes it like nails being hammered and very annoying.

Which digital would i have to choose that would be less noisey in the key action than my current Roland Hp207.

I tried PHAII and older Kawai wooden as well as plastic/metal weight actions next to each other, and the Kawai was much more quiet. I'm not sure how PHAIII compares to newer Kawai actions, but people seem to be saying Roland is still bit noisy and hard bottoming, while Kawai bottoms softly and quietly, although Roland has got improvements in that area. Kawai is said to be the quietest by many anyway, so it's not just my opinion.

I felt though, that Roland is more responsive. Roland is like repeatedly hitting asphalt with a screwdriver and Kawai is like slowly hitting a bed with a sandbag. My -very- extreme and inaccurate analogy. :-D

My Kawai Mp 6 has the new Kawai action, and it is very quiet both up and down. After 3 weeks of playing I dont notice it at all, even when playing pianissimo and very slow. The action is fast and precise, and I really enjoy the touch response. If one wants a harder touch, you have the mp 10 and other models.

The Kawai's I tried are quieter than the Casio's and Roland's I also tried. I don't know how they compare to Yamaha's or Nord's.

Seems a shame to change your DP, if you like it, just for that, can't you move to another room or something? Time for a new partner perhaps :-)

Ya I gotta agree, the kawai's definitely had key action down over the casio's roland, and yama's.

Then again if you started wailing on an acoustics keys I think ud still get some nail sound lol.

But kawai to me seemed the quietest and nicest. If you like the difference in sound it might be the brand for you.

To me, Roland feels like hitting a teenage boy with a hedgehog.

Honestly, it was just the first thing that struck me as vaguely humorous after Googling "hitting a with". My ultimately tragic homage to Hemppa's highly creative descriptions of key feel.

My Mac has the quietest keys...

Bet my iPad with MusicStudio or PocketPiano has quieter keys :-) Touch is a bit, well, lacking .... shall we say.

Sorry for reviving this thread, but is it safe to assume that everyone feels that Kawai has the quietest keys? or is their a quieter set of keys on another board?

I was in a (slightly noisy) music shop just the other day. The Yamahas seemed quiet but what surprised me was how quiet the Korg pianos were (with RH3 action I think). It feels like you strike down onto quite a thick strip of felt or something that damps out almost all the noise - or it seemed like that anyway. It did also give a "squashy" feel at the end of the key strike and the key spacings are a bit uneven, neither of which appealed to me personally - but they were certainly quiet.

Steve, i remember reading that you took your NP88 apart and applied rubber stripping or something to quiet down your NP88 some. Can you let me know how you did this, because the NP88 is as you know, a huge tin can! I'd love to quiet it down some.

That's to bad that the Nord is as loud as you describe.

I didn't know their was a way to modify the bottom out sound by going inside and adding things. . The Korg SP250 I play at the college here has a very loud action. I hate how hard and loud it bottoms out.

The rolands I tried (namely the 300 series) had a lil loud action to them when playing with no sound. I mean you wouldn't notice it but you could tick other people off around ya.

Yamaha I noticed a lil thud from the 300 series 20 30 40, and the cvp501.

Kawai is just quieter. I mean theirs a slight sound but compared to the others the keys felt more muffled.

I bought a Roland HP302 a month and a half ago because I liked the SN sound and its expressiveness. It sits on a hardwood floor......and when someone is playing it with headphones or I am downstairs working, the thunking noise gives me a headache!

So, next year I can get 60% back within a year and put the cheque toward a Kawai.....couldn't afford the Kawai CN43 this year as it was new, but it appeared to have the quietest keys, better sound, better key action, nicer cabinet and excellent speakers. Perhaps it will cost somewhat less next spring if Kawai comes out with any other models.

It's either that or within 3 years, I can put 70% of the price paid for the HP302 toward a higher priced Roland or Yamaha. The thunkiness of the keyboard is a real downer but the sound is lovely and very expressive.
