Hi here,

So I've transferred my music book collection to my iPad smile So.. I have some music books that I have available. Most (prob 90%) were cut up by me so I could scan then, then I transferred to the iBooks.

I of course paid for these (Einaudi from Europe also) so the Artists have gotten their dues smile

So, what to do with these now? Would they be of use to anyone here? Is that even allowed?

List is as follows..
  • Famous Keyboard Intro Book
  • Train - Drops of Jupiter Book
  • Elton John - The Keyboard Book
  • Billy Joel - The Keyboard Book
  • Coldplay - Play Piano
  • Taylor Swift - Fearless
  • Alfred Movie Books (x2)
  • Einaudi - Una Mattina
  • Einaudi - Nightbook
  • Einaudi - Divenire
  • Einaudi - The Best of Book
  • Nora Jones - Come Away with Me
  • Couple of Theory and Scales books

I'd not be looking for any money only to cover postage. Any of them should be able to go into a USPS PM Flat Rate envelope for sure..

Let me know your thoughts..

Cheers
- Steve

AFAIK, Copyright laws allow you to make a copy of what you own for personal use (as you did on your iPad), but if/when you no longer own the original, you must destroy the copies.

wow that's kind of silly since the artist/s would have gotten their rightful dues (which is why I purchase all my sheet music) but thanks for the heads up.

I do appreciate the heads up, guess I'll have to see how this one plays out was just trying to be kind and recycle but I can see how this may be viewed the other way (by them not you)

TTigg, if you're only asking for postage, it's as if you bought a music book for someone as a gift-or re-gifting. It's paid for, you're not selling them and making a profit. I guess, unless someone "turns you into the music police" I wouldn't see a problem here.

Of course, having said this, and knowing that it maybe shouldn't be done, I myself might feel guilty.

But, on the other hand, what about those who donate music to Goodwill or other places like flea markets? They resell them, right?

I don't know, it's kind of a conundrum.

Ttigg, I think the ethical issue comes into play in that the people who obtain the books from you, owing to your very kind generosity, are not buying copies themselves... thus depriving the composers and publishers their "rightful due."

That being said, it IS an incredibly nice gesture. How about donating them to a local music school and/or seeing if a local piano teacher knows of a deserving family who is struggling financially?

Myself, I'd hang onto them even if I had a digital copy. But then again, I'm a packrat.

The digital copy can fail. If you had the origionals boxed up and stored somewhere that would save you from having to repurchase them if something happened to the computer. I'm also a packrat, but in this situation I think hoarding the origionals would be perfectly logical.

I'll figure it out eventually.
Until then you may want to keep a safe distance.

Interesting indeed, what a can of worms smile

As far as digital failing that is true. However they are
  • on my iPad
  • on my iTunes
  • on my computer
  • backed up to external drive
  • backed up to online storage
If all of that goes wrong I've got way bigger issues wink

Monica,
I thought about local music school but they've been cut up (so I could scan) Of course still usable for like-minded piano geeks. This is why I was posting here since you guys are my "Piano family" so I just wanted to return some favors.

What happens if/when you have a crash and lose your files? Trust me when I say that digital files are temporary at best. I talk to people often who have lost everything when their hard drive crashed. Yes, I know the iPad's drive is solid state and probably more reliable than a heard drive, but . . .

I say keep the originals just in case.

EDIT: Nevermind. I see from your above post that you already have multiple backups in place. You should be as safe as it is possible to be from data loss.

Thanks Dennis,
Yep I'm a bit of a computer geek and I run a side business from home so ALL of my stuff is backed up in at least 2 places away from the PC.

I've bought lots of music books & sheet music in 2nd hand book stores, & at the public library's semi-annual book sales.
