My mother is looking to purchase a Yamaha piano. She has been looking at new and used models.
The piano's she is interested in are either a brand new upright U1 or U3 or a used baby grand circa 1993 GH1B, 5’3” piano (serial # B 5231270) The baby grand has a black-satin finish which she prefers.
I played them and I liked the upright a little better only because I think I am so used to playing an upright. The keys seemed harder to depress than I'm used to.
The baby grand is in excellent condition. The lady that owns it keeps it and her home immaculately clean.

We need some help deciding which one to buy! The used baby grand is $4500 (that seems like a good deal to me). Thanks in advance!

J.C., does she play piano or is she looking to learn? Is this intended to be a furniture piece? Is this a way for her to lure you over to come visit more often? (Laugh, but my own mother did exactly this!)

I inherited an old upright that I've now had for 15 years and have many times wished it was a grand, even if only for the look. People on this site are quite particular about their playing and will insist that the aesthetic is of negligible importance. If your mother is anything like me or my mother, however, she may look back and wish she'd gotten the grand.

Don't let anyone shame you out of wanting something that LOOKS good, even if it is primarily a musical instrument!

Now the obligatory: "Get the one that sings to you... follow your heart... play them and get the one with the best feel and tone... make sure it's checked out by an RPT... you sure you don't wanna consider a(n) <insert brand name here>?..."

Good luck!

The Yamaha GH1B is not exactlty the optimum Yamaha scale design (tenor section) for Yamaha baby grands. I will admit the GH1B is much better than the earlier GH1.
I might prefer the new U3 over the GH1B. If one was thinking in the lines of a NEW U3,than I would maybe seek out a preowned C1(5'3") which is the same size as the GH1B. A preowned C1 would be at a similar $ pricepoint to the NEW U3.

I think the GH1B action/touch wise feels pretty good so....if you are content with the way it sounds than $4500 is much less $ than 10K+ which a new U3 would cost.
wink
