Well, I have room in the garage for a Porsche, but no room for a "D" (unless IT went into the garage). But, having raced a 1958 Speedster back in the '60s, I know how little a driver can appreciate the qualities of a high performance car unless he/she has track access.

Then again I can't get the performance that a "D' has either!

Maybe a 65" 3-D TV later this year I can get the most out of that (although there'e not much worth viewing.)

Guess I'll keep the cash to hand down to the kids.

A Steinway or a posh metal box on wheels that gets you from A to B just as any metal box on wheels will?

Without hesitation - I'd pick the Steinway. The pleasure is more lasting!

Can I tweek the parameters? Can I choose from something a little more familiar?
I'll call it a Schimmel K213 NWS vs a BMW 750 Li.
The list price is about the same although I think you can get the Schimmel for less.
I'll take the Schimmel. I'm at the piano more than I'm in the car. It won't get as dirty as quick. It won't get scratched by those wonderful people in the parking lots (it's inappropriate to use the other name for them) and I would probably pay less for maintenance over the long term and keep it longer.
There is nothing like the beamer's ability to do high speed, but unless you are in Germany it's hard to enjoy it without the risk of getting caught. (Driving in Germany is a great experience. People there understand that unless you are really flying or passing, you stay out of the left lane.)
Besides, I've already had the 7 series (there really isn't anything higher end that interests me to the point that I'd want to pay for it) but I'm still playing my Knight upright that I returned to last August. I've been dreaming of that Schimmel for the last 5 months and hoping for that winning lottery ticket.

While I love most things about the US of A, that is one thing that really chaps my arse about people here.

I'd happily take the Steinway, sell both my M&H and my 2002 Civic, buy a new Accord and take my wife to Europe.

I'd take the Steinway. A Porsche wouldn't get me anywhere that I couldn't get in my Ford sedan, but a Steinway would open up experiences well beyond what my (very good for what it is) Schimmel upright can manage.

I'd take the D. At least I can't get killed with a D unless I have these rare scenarios:

- The D suddenly collapsed on me while I'm playing the piano from under it for a home talent show.
- There's a fire in the house while I'm playing a long ballade and I really have an urge to finish it.

Plus the teenager wouldn't be able to steal the keys and get in trouble with it.

What good is a sports car if you're already hitched? I'd go for the Steinway.

The question was if your "partner in life" offered you one or the other.

If some anonymous donor decided to do me a favor right now, Porche all the way.

I would take the GT2 (or better yet, a GT3) with the full knowledge that I am way too much of a maniac to drive such a fine machine for very long. I would then use the insurance settlement to buy the Steinway, assuming that I was still able to play following the inevitable accident.

I have a 20-year old Ford and it gets me everywhere I want to go in the style to which I'm accustomed.
The Steinway, without hesitation. (Although in reality I'd suggest we keep the Schimmel and the Ford, and invest the money for a rainy day).

I don't understand your all's logic... You say that you a ford gets you the same place as a porsche, yet a mediocre piano doesn't play the same piece as a steinway? Completely flawed logic. I would without a bit of doubt take the porsche
