Hi all. I am new here! I am 16, and I have been playing piano for around 9 years.

My current piano is a 1905 Story and clark special built cabinet grand piano.
I shall start my story of my recent acquirement, by telling you of how I got to this piano.

I was surfing craigslist about 7-8 months ago, and I stumbled on something that seemed far too good to be true.

An 1855 Erard 6' grand about 5 miles from me. For $1,000 in original condition.

So I go see it and I fell in love with it! It was in excellent shape. Although the keys needed to be replaced, the piano was in near excellent condition mechanically. The soundboard did show very few cracks. But hey this piano is 155 years old!!!!

So we seem to have an agreement to buy the piano. I of course must sell my instruments to gain money.

So I sell my fully restored 1914 Krakauer 56" upright at an astonishingly low $600. I had it appraised locally for $10,000. But I need this erard right away!
I also needed to sell my organ. A 1968 Rodgers 22b 2m/32p full sized analog organ. I bought it for $1,500 the year before and I sold it for $400.

After all that.... I call the guy to arrange a time to have the movers come get it, and he decides that he didnt want to sell the piano... WHAT?!?!?! I just got a $11,000 loss, and I am left with nothing!?
Well I was very depressed after having to sell my beloved instruments. And thought i could never find something nice for $1,000

Well I did folks! I was going to buy this very ugly limeish white looking antique Mason and Hamlin upright. I did not like it because it didnt have much sound.
But I found this story and clark at another store just before i was going to buy that M&H. I instantly fell in love with it! It was the most ornate looking piano I have ever seen!

$500!!! I bought it later that day!

About the piano

Ok so this is of course a Story and clark made in 1905. I dont think they made many more if any. Story and clark apparently nearly bought the piano back from the store to restore and display at their factory.

The piano is in original condition. I am slowly fixing it up. I am in the process of replacing the ivories with new old stock ivories. A lot of them are chipped and yellowed from years of lots of playing.

The piano is very unique in that it has carvings everywhere! Its crazy! There are even carvings on the insides around the pin block. Very small ones too!

The pin block is birds eye maple, and you can see Story and Clark written out in inlayed oak.

The plate is painted black and has gold flowers painted all throughout it. Story and Clark is also stamped on it in gold.

The left pedal bar/hammer back rest, is chromed/silverish and has Story and clark outlined in gold in the center.

It has a Rinky Tink pedal as well but I removed it as it gets in the way of the hammers sometimes.

It is gorgeous. No wonder you fell in love with it. The ornate design is a work of art.

I have a soft spot in my heart for old Story Clark pianos. I currently have a marvelous 7 foot Kawaii, which is my pride and joy. However, I still have my old Story and Clark console which is over 50 years old. In fact, the soundboard came with a 50 year warranty which just ran out.

True it does not compare in sound to my Kawai, but I love that old piano. It is a beautiful Mahogany, and I have kept it in pristine condition. The whole family played it,--my children and my grandchildren. There has been a lot of love around that piano. They really made them beautiful in the olden days. Much as I love my ebony Kawai, my heart still belongs to my Story Clark. Gaby Tu

Thanks Gaby!

I love the old story and clarks. This was kind of in their golden age. Their new ones (grands) are fairly nice but just nothing like the used to be!

It might as well be a spinet compared to my old Krakauer (that I swear had more volume than most 7' grands!) But it does its justice and has great tonality.

Im sure when this piano is fully restored with new strings and some adjustments it will be a fine work of art!

btw I really love Kawai pianos! Nearly bought an old Kawai black upright from the 70s.
