Hello all.
Due to a number of factors, most particularly my schedule, I'm not really able to get myself lessons from a piano instructor. I've been trying to teach myself using things like the Alfred's books, but I seem to learn much better from visual and auditory lessons combined; I learn things faster by watching people play on Youtube than I do from the Alfred's book. Nevertheless, I would like to also like to be able to read the sheet music properly, something that I can't get from the generally unprofessional style of Youtubers.
Does anyone have any experience with software or DVD instructionals that they could recommend?

Have you tried the Scott Houston's Play piano in a flash? I realize it only emphasize lead sheet music but I think he may have some videos that take it a further step. There are others out there as well.

I'm sorry, I'm unfamiliar with your terminology. What is lead sheet music?

Welcome to the forum, Postponderance. "Lead sheets" are a bare-bones kind of sheet music that indicates a melody line (using single notes) along with chord symbols, and the pianist makes up his or her own arrangement on the fly. I'm in awe of those musicians who can sit down and rattle off a wonderful arrangement from a lead sheet. What kind of music do you want to be able to play? Lead sheets are used primarily in jazz or pop/rock music.

I have rather eclectic tastes as far as music goes, so I would like to play various styles, but my strongest preference would be for classical, I think.

Welcome, Postponderance...
I'd like to draw your attention to my website. (The link is in my signature below). I have recently published a piano method book that works well for independent adult learners. It is exclusively classical but gives you all the instruction you need in learning to read music so you can go on to other styles of music as well. The reason I think it will especially work for you is that right now I'm in the process of producing a set of videos that will supplement the book. I will begin releasing the videos, one every few days, beginning this week. They will be downloads that you purchase with PayPal and then save to your computer to watch at your leisure. I'm designing it so that the book and videos together make a comprehensive system.
So, if you are interested, feel free to PM or email me.
Best wishes and good luck!

I'm new to the forum as well but I wanted to make everyone aware that the guy that runs "masterofinstruments" is known for posing as a beginner and posting shill reviews and recommendations for his own product. He does it on youtube also. I can say nothing about the quality of the product but that kind of BS is underhanded. If it's really that good......
At least Rachael is upfront that she's selling something.
