We have a Behr Bros and Co New Yor upright grand. patent date July 1881. It's a beautiful black piano with some etching on the front of it. It seems to be in very good condition for its apparent age. It needs tuning. There's only one key that's profoundly flat. It really does not sound very bad at all. This is not a player piano.

I can provide you with more information, if needed. We're just curious about the likely value of it.

Thank you.

Old upright pianos have very little value these days, as one can buy a new one for less than it costs to refurbish an old one. People have trouble giving them away.

Boo Hoo. That's not the sort of news I wanted to hear. It's in very good condition. Honestly with a good tuning, I think it would be fine. It looks great. Nothing's broken on it at all.

If you like your piano, then forget about worrying about how much it is worth in dollars and cents. And as Bdb points out, it most likely would be difficult to sell, as really old uprights are in the "give away, category.
However, obviously, from your posts, it is worth a lot to you and that is what matters. Have a technician check it out, and if you are pleased with his/her report, then get it tuned, and enjoy it.

Chinese pianos??? I hear some are well made. I hear they're all junk. You folks are the pros and I'd appreciate YOUR opinions.

Hi Moby and welcome to the forum. The quality of Chinese pianos is a hot topic around here. For example, if you search the forum for "Hailun" or "Brodmann" you'll have enough to read to keep you busy for a while. Quick summary: the quality of Chinese pianos is improving rapidly. The most recent offerings seem to be very good, whereas the earlier ones left a lot to be desired. Larry

Retail value likely under $500. The patent date is likely not the manufacture date of the piano. Find a serial number and we may be able to date the age.
