How's it going, MOYD players? Are you still in? Are you practicing or just going through the motions?

I'm doing OK with MOYD this year. It has helped me get to the bench pretty much every day after I take my daughters to school and before my son wakes up. That's time I used to use for . . . well, I used to waste it, that's what. I usually get back to the piano at night, but not always.

Anyone?

Cindy -- hoping her piano-playing sister will finally finally *finally* join MOYD and the practice log

I've been sitting every day, usually several times a day for short periods. I think I'm going to scoot over to your other thread and make a commitment to practice in larger blocks, at least for the month of March...

Hmm...are we actually supposed to be practicing? As I just stated in another post, I have a problem in that I only play...don't practice...am I out?

When I reach the place I'm going, I will surely know my way.

I have practiced every day except for out of town days since Jan 1. Sometimes it's been really short, but I've done it.

I didn't play 2/25-2/27 because I was staying at the hospital with my husband after his lung surgery. I think it counts as an "away from home" exemption. He let me go home last night, late.

I started again today and it wasn't pretty, but it was good to feel the keys under my fingers! The fine tuning wasn't there, but it will be back. Now I'm sitting in a chair next to his bed, and there's wi-fi in hospital so I can surf the web while he sleeps!

Definitely still in. Actually I haven't missed a day since this time last year. Knock on wood.

Slow down and do it right.

I'm still in...I had a travel exemption early in January but have played every day other than that.

rocky, I think you're still in; my memory was that any kind of time put in at the piano bench counts.

I'm still going pretty well - can't believe it's two months now (or more). I thought I might have improved a little more quickly, but it's still fun anyway. Most days I do about 45 minutes. I'm starting to think about doing an online recital piece and am mulling over some ideas for it.

I'm still in, and working hard. I am doing the Sonatina Medal for Guild at the end of May, that is 5 sonatinas (14 movements) from memory. At my age, 47, I am very concerned about the memory! I have all the movements learned except half of one I am still working on, and most of them memorized well enough to get through, but with occasional pauses or backtracks for memory lapses. I still make too many mistakes but I am cleaning them up bit by bit. My teacher says I am on track, but I am feeling like May is coming too soon.

I have also started practicing hymns (basic 4 part harmonies) 30 minutes every day. I really need to be able to play them to be a useful piano player--many opportunities there, many more than to perform classical. My struggle is to play them well enough for somebody to sing with--either I pause to be sure of a chord, or I try to play through, hit it wrong, and get completely lost.

Anyway, plenty of motivation to practice every day!

Cindy, you can re-add me to the list if you want. I'm over my temper tantrum now. =)

I missed 4 days out of the last 2 weeks. Restart me on the 27th. Thanks.

Cindy -

MOYD has made me a compulsive piano-practicer. Some of my practices really are just going through the motions, but on the whole I am practicing more and better.

This weekend will be a total drag - I've got 2 kids in end-of-season hockey tournaments - 6-8 games across 2 kids (stretching from Frederick MD to Dale City VA). But I've penciled in my practice times and it is doable.

Heck, though I managed to practice every day right through the season, so I should be able to do better through September!

Cindy -

I'm still going strong smile

Only on a couple of occasions have I had to force myself to play scales at 11.35pm so I wouldn't fail the challenge.

All the other days have been fairly easy (I'm only working part-time at the moment, so I've got more spare time than most)

Euan.

Read this thread here for the history and rules of the MOYD challenge (basically, we challenge one another to practice or play the piano every single day). Then if you want to join in on the fun, post something to that effect on the MOYD list thread that's pinned at the top of the AB topics. You can start late.

Here' a confession of piano love.

I just came back from an overnight trip with my spouse. It was at Atlantic City and they had lobby pianos (near the convention rooms). But every single one I spotted was locked - tight.

I wouldn't have mind sitting on the bench playing a little. I wouldn't have caused a stir.

I had a lump in my throat - my thought - so close, yet so far. What a tease those pianos were.

My husband looked at me like I was out of my mind. Gambling machines and card tables all over the place, and I'm sad over the piano. At that point I realized that even after 21 years of marriage, he'll never understand my obsession - and I'll never understand his. But I'm sure if he could have unlocked that piano for me, he would have.

Sharon
