A teacher friend said she's received emails from this website and knows someone who has students thru this site. Of course, they get a percentage but I'm more concerned about how reliable it is. Has anyone heard of or used this?

I'm having a tough time getting new students since I left the store. Some came over with me,most dropped all together. If anyone knows of reputable websites that help teachers find students, I would be most appreciative.

I have heard of this site, however, I am more comfortable with face-to-face lessons. I just need the interaction of the instructor in the room with me. I am not opposed to online learning, I taught in an online nursing program adjunct however the students were already nurses. It was more theoretical, paper writing.... not learning a skill. I think theory would be good online type of class. What about advertising in the local paper and churches for students. One woman I used to work with her sister was a pianist played for over 40 years (not degreed). She fills in for several churches when the pianist is out. You may advertise and play for weddings, anniversaries, graduations etc... I hire my teacher every year to play for the Christmas party I give my family/friends. By getting yourself out in different venues you may gain new students as well.

There is always the question is the customer the salons or hair dressers. I have always followed my hairdresser. I would think for consistency students (if still in the local area) would follow the teacher.

Just my thoughts.

Deb, I think lessons.com is a matchmaking site for teachers and students even for face-to-face lessons.

Hi Deb, I don't think this is an online lesson plan. I will double check.

It says Locally or online. They ask for student location and then match up with a teacher in the same area.

Don't know about lessons.com, but a friend of mine hired a teacher for face-to-face piano lessons for his wife from www.musikalessons.com. He hired a reliable, professional piano teacher with a Bachelors in Music, who made home visits in his case. As a result, his wife has been having lessons with her through the www.musikalessons.com site for almost 2 years now.

Have you looked at takelessons.com? I found a great piano teacher for my daughter there.

From wikipedia..."TakeLessons is an American venture-backed startup that connects students with pre-screened music teachers, academic tutors, dance, acting, and foreign language instructors locally and online."

I don't see why anyone in business for themselves should limit themselves to registering on only one of these websites. I'd register on all the reputable ones. It's not like any of them will pay the teachers anything just to list themselves.

Two recommendations: I joined ‘Next Door’ local web community and use it to find recommendations for professionals and other neighbors do the same. There are not many questions about music teacher’s— but some and the membership is free. You can also search the archives to find relevant postings.

Also mtna.com

You want some of mine? I'm swamped! But seriously, I'm sorry to hear that.

I have gotten at least four students via NextDoor. I am one of only two piano teachers in our rather large neighborhood, and the other teacher is in semi-retirement and would rather I take the new students.

Hi Solo, thanks, I did look them up and there were a lot of bad reviews about experiences with that company. I'm glad you had a good experience. Also, they only have online teaching, correct?

I am sorry I have to withdraw my suggestion on Takelessons after seeing those negative reviews you mentioned. Now I recall that although we first saw the teacher listed there, we contacted her through her other simultaneous ad, so we never had any experience dealing with them, good or bad. In any case, looks like you've got some Real help. Wishing you the best of luck.

I found my current teacher through TakeLessons.com, he is a Russian concert pianist and after prepaying for X number of lessons, I then worked out a separate payment system with him so I avoid all the annoying follow up emails from the TakeLessons.com site.

ChasingRainbows, I have also heard of Lesson Face not sure how reputable it is. I have also seen ads for private lessons not associated with a school.

A few years ago, I decided to maybe try home lessons, but did not know how to set out my own shingle.

So, I called TakeLessons.com, knowing they could help me, and did a brief phone interview. (they returned my call when I was driving and I told them as much...)

They assigned me two students almost immediately, just based on geography. After a few months, one mom said, "I would rather pay you directly, instead of through the company, because I see all the good work you are doing, and all they do is send a bill."

So, she turned in notice to them, and then paid me the same amount, which was effectively a raise!

Once I realized I could teach at home (taxes, inventory, dog, husband, life...) I quit TakeLessons and students transferred to me after a couple of months.

Now all my home students are word of mouth only and after five years, really no complaints. I know the parents and they usually sit in during the lessons.

As for TakeLessons, anyone can be cool on-line. I suggest a meet up, discuss goals and expectations, and see if the teacher is a good teacher.

(Still laugh at how I got in at TakeLessons with only a phone interview no where near a piano!)

As for on-line lessons, get GOOD cameras. A teacher should notice more than just your hands.

Hi Miss Belle. Thanks for picking up on my post. I also noted that TakeLessons seemed to accept anyone. I'm thinking about signing up with musikalessons.com to re-start my studio. They, OTOH, have a lot of pre-requisites prior to signing the contract.
