The movers may have not put the rods in the proper place. There is usually an adjustment for the length of the rod that needs to be set properly. If the damper pedal rod is where the soft pedal rod should be, for instance, the rods may not be adjusted properly for the pedal they are connected to.

Hmm had a feeling that might be the case. I've heard it's not uncommon for movers to mess up setting up the lyre/pedals from other piano techs and they say it's usually not too difficult to find and fix the problem. I'll find out when the tuner comes over.

There is a high probability this is the problem. The movers should have checked it for you before they left.

You could remove the pedal rods and see if the sustain works properly with a single note. If so, the sustain rod adjustment is likely the problem. Also, you can adjust the pedal rods up or down while in place with adjustment nuts on the rods.

Either way, I doubt the sustain issue is a major problem.

Sounds like you got a great buy on the Kimball grand. Looking at the pictures again it does look like one of the Viennese models.

Congratulations and enjoy!! smile

The movers should have labeled the rods with masking tape when they took them apart. -- Rather than using the "seems to fit" method..... ;-)

It could be that the pitman popped out of place during the move. The pitman is a small dowel or rod that goes from the top of the damper lever up through the keybed to the damper tray.

Phew, okay. Got home and checked up on the pedals. Took off the sustain pedal's rod, and sure enough, now all the keys play fine and dampers work perfectly. Pitman is there. Seems like the movers might have switched around the rods because the one for the sustain is a bit too long and is already pushing up and lifting the dampers just enough. Don't have anything to take off the lyre to switch around the rods, so I'll just wait until the tuner comes, not in a hurry.

Hey everyone, just felt like giving an update on the piano. I have to say this is an amazing instrument, especially for only $800. Got it tuned and the pedals are all working fine. :-)
