I’m wanting to use my AvantGrand N1 to run sample libraries like Ravenscroft, Garritan CFX, and Pianoteq. Can I simply use a MIDI to USB cable to run from my laptop to my AvantGrand and control the sounds or do I need a special interface? Will be wanting to do the same eventually with the MP11SE.

Pardon my ignorance. I’ve been out of the music tech world for a while.

Zac, a MIDI-to-USB cable should from your N1 to computer should be fine.

However, bear in mind that the sound will be produced by your laptop. In order to hear it through the AvantGrand's speakers, you will also need to connect the laptop's output (headphone jack?) to the N1's Line In connectors.

If you're using a Windows PC without an external interface, the ASIO4ALL software driver (free download) should help to reduce latency.

Kind regards,
James

Excellent info James, and thank you very much. I’ll be a using a 2014 MacBook Pro. As far as using the speakers, will it require a cable that goes from the 1/4” jack on my computer to the line in? I’m so out of the loop wi4h stuff like this!

Btw, I was looking to pick up a Roland UM-ONE MK2 USB MIDI interface cable.

Hello Zac,

If you're using a Mac, latency should be less of an issue.

I expect the output connector on the laptop will be a stereo 1/8" output, while the AvantGrand probably uses separate L/R 1/4" Line In connectors, so you will need a cable with the correct connectors on each end. This is a relatively common connection task though, so a suitable cable should be easy to find.

The UM-ONE mk2 is probably one of the best USB-MIDI cables available.

I was under the impression that the N1 had a 'USB to Host' port for connecting to a computer with an inexpensive USB A-B cable. However, checking the specs on the Yamaha website, this does not appear to be the case, so a USB-MIDI cable such as the UM-ONE will be necessary.

Kind regards,
James
