It is still oddly secret, but now becoming a more open secret. Prominent Toronto piano retailer Robert Lowrey died suddenly at home in his sleep over the Christmas holidays. No funeral, no obituary, no public mention at all. No mention on his extensive website, which celebrates his 40 years in business. If you scroll down enough to the "Appraisals" section below, you will see him with his typical shy, wry smile, and wearing a shop apron:

What I can tell you all is that Mr. Lowrey was kind, honorable, knowledgeable, and self-effacing, as admirable a piano retailer as I could imagine. Moreover, he surrounded himself with equally kind and honest staff, many of whom have been part of his team for many years. This was not happenstance, such staff loyalty and kindness. It speaks to him.

He sold fabulous pianos - Boesendorfers, Schimmels, Estonias, and more affordable acoustic brands, Yamaha and Roland hybrids and digitals, etc. His store is a handsome, large keyboard emporium, with several salons; there is a full rebuilding department as well.

Many of us are in shock at the news of this sweet man's passing (I believe he was only in his mid 60s). I hope Robert Lowrey knew he was appreciated, even as the piano trade struggles.

Rob was always a true gentleman.

I enjoyed getting to know him and enjoyed speaking to him every so often as well. He was a huge baseball fan and we had planned on getting together to see The Phillies here in Philadelphia.

I will miss his kind way and honest concern.

God bless you Rob.

A lovely obituary has now appeared in the Toronto Star:

A gentle man indeed, as Rich and Steve have said.

(He proved to be a bit older than many of us surmised, but very boyish.)
