Hello all,

I am new here ...

I am an amateur guitar player whose eager to start learning an playing the piano. I've been doing some research online, gone to some stores, and have decided to buy a digital piano. I have narrowed my search to 3 brands: Casio, Yamaha, and Roland.

So far, I tried, in this order

Casio PX-750
Casio PX-850

Yamaha Arius YDP-142
Yamaha Arius YDP-162
Yamaha Arius YDP-181
Yamaha Clavinova CLP-430

I am planning on finishing my hunt next weekend by going to see the Roland RP-301 and/or RP-301R.

I was very impressed with the Casios, but I will admit that after trying the Yamaha, I was even more impressed. I was not intending on the Clavinova, but the store I visit is not going to be a Yamaha dealer anymore, and he had two Clavinova models on clearance, for $2,200. This is very tempting, but my initial budget was around $1,500.

Anyhow, I am here hoping to receive feedback in terms of piano choices to purchase, and other feedback that will encourage me with my new quest on pursuing piano playing.

I've been reading this forum for a while now, but until now, I did not dare to write. I like all genres of music, but when it comes to the piano, classical is almost all that comes to mind. As an anecdote, I learned some very little piano a long time ago, and my teacher suggested me listening to Satie, just because of the way I approached the instrument.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!

You never know quite how an instrument will be until you get it home and play it for a few weeks. Keyboard action is important. Kawai seem to have scored well on this thoughout their range. Everybody has their favourites, so don`t rush! I wish you luck!

Why no Kawai?

Why no Roland FP-4F ? It seems to be in your price range.

I own a PX-350. I played an FP-4F a few months after I bought it, and was really impressed. It has a very nice action, and the sound (to my ears) is luscious.

All this evaluation is very personal and (largely) subjective. If you want to go a bit crazy, start reading the "DPBSD" thread!

Thanks to all for your kind replies.

@ChopinAddict ... I am assuming you like Chopin. Could you recommend me any learning materials for beginners to start playing some of his piano music? Thanks.

@peterws @MagicK I did not choose Kawai because when I narrowed my brand choice down to three, Kawai seemed to be priced way over ... but I will hear any suggestion on Kawai if it is around the $1,500.

@mitzysman The 181 is also one of my favorites, but for an additional $300 I could get the Clavinova on clearance. Do you think it is worth the extra $300? Thanks.

@ChalresCohen I looked at the FP-4F but I do not like the design. I am looking more for a cabinet digital piano. However, I am going to be visiting a store that has Roland, and I will make sure to check out the FP-4F.

Thanks again to all for your help!!!! I am checking back for more comments. encouragement related to learning, methods, etc. is also appreciated.

I went to see the Roland today, and I did not like it very much. I am more inclined to the Yamaha now ... but since I kind of took the Roland out of the equation, I am curious to see and try the Kawais, as suggested above by MagicK

The CN24 seems to be the kind of piano I'd be interested in. I will go to a dealer to check it out.

Let me know if someone has the CN24, the CN34, or the new CE220, what is your opinion?

Thanks!
