Been going through the Leslie Howard Liszt collection that I got for my birthday last year. Have happily discovered and enjoyed many works that (even I!) hadn't heard yet (whether transcriptions, fantasies, or original works). Some examples:

And another piece, one of my favourite Liszt songs:

And for Jason, Barenboim conducting the Psalm 13: the only one I've seen by a well-known conductor since Beecham.

Perhaps surprisingly, Barenboim could really be considered one of the most productive Liszt exponents of the last century, among famous musicians at least! There's this performance of the 13th Psalm (a very rare work), as well as recordings of:

The Sonata.
First two years of Annees de Pelerinage.
Both Piano Concerti.
Complete Liebestraume and Consolations.
The Faust and Dante Symphonies.
Les Preludes.
The first Legende and Valse Oubilee.
Some Verdi and Wagner paraphrases.
The Second Hungarian Rhapsody.
As well as 44 of his lieder with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau!

Joining the likes of Brendel and Arrau.

It is a shame that the last post on Liszt was over 3.5 years ago!!

In my humble opinion, Franz Liszt was the greatest and most generous musician to ever live.

Why is it a shame? I'm not sure that the length of silence after a thread has run a long course (15 pages on the way my PW is set up), is any indication of any lack of interest in or appreciation of the music of Franz Liszt.

Those, and there were many over the 15 pages, who said what they wanted to say have felt - it would seem to me - no need to repeat what they have already written. While there may be others in the Pianist Corner who may not have enough experience with the music of Liszt to express their views.

One might argue that (put the name of any great composer here) "was the greatest and most generous musician to [have] ever live[d].... That's a debate, once started, that could go on endlessly, depending upon one's definition of "greatness" and "generosity".

It seems to me that Liszt got a very good airing in this thread. The thread had an almost continuous "life" from January through November of 2012, with some additions in 2013. That's a very long life for a thread on Piano World.

A quick search using the word "Liszt" brings up 100 posts in the last four years in which Liszt is mentioned by PW members.

Regards,

BruceD

Regards,

BruceD,

Being a new member here, I obviously am unaware of how to properly look up the 100 posts mentioning Liszt frown because I tried.
I also did not realize this was considered a long life thread for Piano World. I will learn these types of things quickly, I hope?! grin

Thanks for pointing out this for me.
