Hey guys!

I know y'all aren't CPAs, but my tech recently told me that, since I'm a music major, and keeping my piano in good repair (and in tune) is necessary to my study, I could write off my tuning bills as a deduction.

Do any of you know if that's accurate? He was fairly sure, and said he was certain that it was possible if I was teaching on the piano (but I'm not).

Educational expenses are deductible only if your studies are for a profession you are currently engaged in, such as teaching or accompanying, as far as I know. Check with a tax advisor to be certain.

Besides, if you are a student, chances are you do not have enough deductions to itemize anyway.

I'm a dependent; it would be a deduction for my parents.

Disclaimer: not an attorney, not a tax accountant, personal opinion only. Your tech is mistaken in your case. The idea of deductions is to figure a net income. If you are earning money as a piano player (or teacher), you probably owe income tax on it. That piano-related income is the gross income, and tuning expenses would be subtracted from it as a business expense. You probably want to use your tech's piano-related expertise only; like me, he is not a tax expert.

You have to earn money to take deductions. If you are earning money playing the piano or teaching piano, tuning your piano would probably be a deductable business expense for you, but probably not for your parents. You would need to file a schedule C. (disclamer, not a CPA either).
