I tried searching for this information, but was not successful so my apologies if the subject has been covered before.

What do you think are the best music dictionaries and encyclopedias that are worth purchasing for references?

The best dictionary is considered to be the Harvard Dictionary of Music.

Also important is the Baker's Biographical Index of Music and Musicians.

For encyclopedia, the New Grove series are the best. There's one for all music and specialized ones for jazz and opera.

i just got 'the Harvard Concise Dictionary of Music and Musicians' not long ago, which seems pretty good as i fliped over some pages. but i remember i read it somewhere that the non-concised version of it is recomemded.

Second Kreisler's choices. I personally use the Oxford Dictionary of Music. I find it more than adequate.

Oscar Thompson's Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians, though the last edition was pressed back in 1975, one of my most cherished and well-thumbed encyclopedia. I won't part it for anything else.

Other books that might be of interest are A History of Western Music (Grout-Palisca) and the Norton Anthology!

I've started to do some research on the texts listed here but it can get confusing which book does and does not have in it without being able to see it first hand.

So I'm trying to narrow it down by reading reviews such as what you can find on Amazon. But, for example, what are the differences between the Oxford Dictionary of Music and the Oxford Companion to Music? Any firsthand thoughts? In this example, do I need to buy both or is one only needed, etc? It seems for example that the Companion has fewer entries then the Dictionary, but it may go into more detail for each entry. Is either one missing entire types of entries? For example, I read that the Harvard Dictionary of Music does not have any biographical entries.

IMO the best ever is the GROVE dictionary of music. I don't remembre the exact title, but is like an encyclopedia. IT has everything you may need...

What do you need? the answer will help finding the correct title,

Wikipedia rules all, even though it's not specific to music.
