Kawai ES8 or wait for ES9

Kawai ES8 or wait for ES9 - 04/08/19 03:20 PM

Hello!

So i've been taking lessons for about a year now. I started off with an es110 beacuse I wanted to be sured that id stick with piano before dropping too much money. Well now i'm hooked, and i'm looking to upgrade to something with a slightly better action. I dont want to spend too much money because within the next 3-5 years i plan to move into a house of my own and i'd like to shop for an accoustic/upright at that point.

Anyway, I tried out the ES8 at a local shop and really loved it, but based on the release history of the es6, 7, and 8 releases, and the price drop it seems like an es9 could be coming soon. Maybe summer NAMM?

What do you guys think?

Hi SBP,

There is some hope regarding the release of the ES9. For Kawai to release a new model, they would need a new action to improve on the old model. Recently, Kawai started supplying the Nord Grand 'stage piano' with the Kawai RHIII action that currently is used for the MP7SE and the ES8. Given that you don't give the competition your best action (as this impacts upon the competitive success of your own models), it is possible that the RHIV action is imminently to be released, perhaps in the ES9 instrument. That would also suggest the MP8/MP12 might be a few years away at most (as the ES series top of the range has preceded updating of the MP series in the past).

This is of course speculation. It might well not be released!

If you can wait till a few months after summer NAMM, then by all means do so. However, if you have need of urgent update, then I wouldn't wait.

Kind regards,

Doug.

Thanks for the quick reply! I had no idea about Nord getting their hands on that action, which definitely makes the case for an es9 coming soon a bit stronger.

Thanks!

Soo...considering you've been playing a year, I think you're probably far from exceeding any of the technical or musical capabilities of the ES110. And if you're going to be moving into your own house and getting an acoustic soon, I STRONGLY think this is a situation where you should just keep playing your ES110. I've seen professional concert pianists make do with way less for their digital "headphone practice" instrument, so I feel an upgrade isn't a necessary thing to improve your practice or technique in this case, especially in light of your upcoming financial commitments.

Unless you can provide some more information? What do you find deficient about the ES110? Is there anything that feels or sounds wrong with it, or that you're unable to do on it?

I just think that upgrading to a very nice DP like an ES8, and then moving and buying an acoustic, is putting the cart before the horse. Why not move, buy your acoustic first, and then see what you need in terms of a digital?

I have the Kawai Es110, playing nearly two years, practicing 3-4 hrs a day. Doing very well as I am committed, and love this piano BUT just starting to notice the two sensor feel instead of three like the higher end models. I believe when I am really playing fast repetitions, I can tell.
Piano nearly two years old and I use it only at home. Seems somewhat delicate for stage use but then I won’t be ready for prime time for a while.
