I am looking at two digital pianos (Kawai PN 70 and CN 270) locally on craigslist, both are priced at ~$300. Which is the better option - I get those are old, the only specs I could find show double the power on the CN 270 model - but nothing regarding the key action.

Does anyone here have any info on these? I would highly appreciate any feedback as I am looking to get back into playing after I stopped years back.

Kawai CN 270 official information in English and German:

User's manual:

https://www.kawaius-tsd.com/OM/DIGITAL/CN270.PDF

It won an award in 2002, so it's probably an early 2000's model. It's "relatively modern" and this sound sample on YouTube seems "fine":

It's not that far from the modern Kawais. This is Kawais "rock piano" preset on the video. There are more "classical" ones too. But probably the sound isn't quite as lively and realistic as in the modern ones and it doesn't seem to have any resonances mentioned in the specifications.

It has quite low 32 note polyphony, that could be an issue if you play something "more elaborate" with the sustain pedal down.

It's briefly mentioned on this forum too:

Kawai PN 70 official information in English and German:

User's manual:

It's an older model. Probably from the late 90's or so. It's probably the more primitive from these two.

Old newsgroup discussion often reveal the age of the device and provide first hand experiences from actual owners. Here are results for the CN270 and PN70:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!search/Kawai$20CN270
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!search/Kawai$20PN70

Some comments suggest that the PN70 has a tendency for noisy key return and that "The action was never really suitable for developing classical piano skills".

$300 isn't a totally ridiculous asking price for the CN270, but please remind the seller that it's almost 20 years old and digital piano technology has taken giant leaps since then. Brand new models from the reputable brands in the $500...1000 range are significantly better. Like a Roland FP30.

clothearednincompo, nice detective work! wink

kermit_xc, given a choice between the two, I would probably go for the CN270.

However, in all honesty, I believe you're better to save your money and buy a more recent instrument. Even an entry level board like the FP-30 or ES110 would be preferable to these ~20 year old DPs.

Kind regards,
James

I second James' recommendation - DP technology - in both action and sound - has improved significantly over last 20 years.

Dutch Dhamma - by telling people to stop using the name of their choosing you deeply offend me and I'm sure many other people. Will you therefore stop doing it?

Your problem, not his. Live with that or just leave.

Thank you to everyone who has flagged this thread. Please note that the matter has been dealt with. Osho may post in peace.
No need for anymore reports on this subject.

what exactly is happening here with the Osho non-sense ... and thank you wise folks for the feedback. Seller CN-270 seller brought up a comp from 2008 where he found the model selling for $800 and is firm at $400 - definitely a pass. Going to wait patiently for something to come up
