Roland FP-30 + Bluetooth MIDI - 07/07/16 01:54 AM

If you are trying to use an app that does not support Bluetooth MIDI (many apps don't right now) - Korg has an app that allows you to automagically re-route the FP-30's Bluetooth connection to almost any MIDI app. It works on iOS, Mac OS and Windows - and it fixed the Bluetooth connection on my Macbook Air, iPad Air and iPad 3 which couldn't see the FP-30 until I installed the app. After I installed the Korg app, the FP-30's Bluetooth MIDI connection became plug & play and very stable on my Macbook and iPad Air. Check it out! note - I was not able to get Bluetooth to work on my older iPad 2, so there may be compatibility issues with older hardware

Groove On, thanks for the links.

Which apps are you referring to specifically? I've only tried Bluetooth MIDI on an iPad, but all of the apps I tried (admittedly just a handful) worked fine.

I'm rather interested in the Windows driver though, as unlike iOS/OS X, I don't believe Microsoft currently supports Bluetooth MIDI.

I wonder if the Korg driver also works with the Quiccosound mi.1 and Yamaha Bluetooth MIDI adaptors?

Cheers,
James

Hi James,

Initially I was only able to get the FP-30 Bluetooth working with Garageband by going into the Garageband's Bluetooth settings and turning it on for the FP-30. Logic may also have this setting but I don't know it well enough.

When I reset the machines - neither my Macbook Air, iPad Air or iPad 3 could see the FP-30 in MIDI mode (though oddly enough, they saw it when I switched to the Bluetooth Page Turn mode). None of the other apps I tried have a "Bluetooth" setting to turn on, so I was kinda stuck there. After installing the Korg app/drivers, both devices are only too happy and eager to tell me that there's a Roland FP-30 in the house. thumb Though like I said, my older iPad 2 still won't see the FP-30 even with the Korg software installed. But I can't really say what the exact problem was. It may just be something fiddly with the Bluetooth MIDI settings in Mac OS and iOS, which I'm sure will get sorted out with some future update.

I tried several synthesizer apps, then Logic, Ableton, Fruity Loops, Piano Maestro, Piano Marvel, Note Trainer etc. and they are all now plug & play with the Bluetooth connection - just as if I had used a USB MIDI cable.

That's good to hear.

However, I wonder if this Korg driver introduces a little extra latency compared to the native Bluetooth MIDI functionality built into iOS/OS X?

Before iOS 8 was released, the Quiccosound mi.1 also used its own 'host' app on iOS to connect with MIDI apps. It worked pretty well, however when native Bluetooth MIDI support was added to iOS (thus negating the need for the mi.1 control app), latency and stability improved somewhat.

Kind regards,
James

That's beyond me f but what I can tell you is that once the Korg app is installed, the FP-30 shows up right away in the regular iOS/Mac OS Bluetooth connection - so you can connect directly through the OS from there.
