Recital #49 is now open for submissions!

Believe it or not, it’s time for the 49th quarterly “Beginners and Beyond” recital hosted by the Piano World Adult Beginners Forum! smile The recital will be posted some time on the 15th of February, which means that submissions must be in by 9:00 pm Eastern Standard Time, February 14. Please note this deadline is very firm; I cannot start working on the recital until it is closed, and once it is closed, no new entries can be added.

While any and all styles of music are welcome, we do ask that it be piano related. Only one recording may be submitted per forum member (although that recording may consist of a medley of two or more very short related pieces).

Editing or digital alteration of your performance (other than minor edits such as trimming long silences at the end or beginning of the piece) is counter to the 'live recital' spirit of the AB Forum Recital and is thus strongly discouraged. In any event, any editing should be disclosed in the "additional information" section of the recital submission template.

If you are fairly new to the piano, please do not be intimidated by some of the talent here in the ABF. We all consider ourselves to be beginners even though we may have been playing for some time. And, we LOVE to hear recordings from folks new to the keyboard. So even if you’re on your first Alfred’s method book, we would *really* enjoy hearing from you. heart

Recital submissions must be in MP3 format. The maximum size of the file is 20 MB. We recommend encoding the recording at 192 kbs with a constant bitrate, as that works best with the online streaming player. At that bitrate, a 20 MB file works out to be about 7-9 minutes in length. Your recording will be normalized when placed in the consolidated zip files, but your original link will still be available for those who want it.

If you are new to recording your music, there are several threads in the forum archives that address the ways and means. See the "Important Topics in the AB Forum" thread stickied at the top of the AB forum page. Audacity is an excellent free recording application that can be used.

If you’re new to the forum and the recitals, I encourage you to browse through a few of the past recitals to see what they’re like. An easy way to find past recitals is to use Sam S.’s extremely helpful recital index, located here:

http://recitals.pianoworld.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Submitting Your Recording:

We will be using again the absolutely marvelous automatic web-based recital program that mahlzeit wrote for us. You will upload your mp3 file to the recital server as part of the recital submission process.

When you have your mp3 file ready, go to:

http://recitals.pianoworld.com/

and follow the instructions there. Please note that the software does not cope well with international characters, so please convert any such characters to standard American characters. Once you have uploaded your info to the automated recital software, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. You will have the opportunity to revise your submission any time up until the deadline. If you have any problems at all using the website, or if you do not receive a confirmation e-mail within a few hours, just PM me. If you have not participated in past recitals using this software, I strongly encourage you to submit your recital piece at least a day in advance in case you run into any problems with it.

The recital website uses the following submission template to be filled out along with your attached music file. You may want to have your responses to these fields prepared in advance so all you have to do is cut and paste:

Performer's Name: {forum ID and real name if you’d like}
Where you are located: {optional}
Avatar image link: {optional}
Experience: {Yrs/Mos of piano playing experience}
Link to YouTube or other video: {optional}
Home page link: {optional}
Title of piece/composer:
Source of music: {sheet music, improvised score, play-by-ear, etc}
Instrument used: {Piano make, keyboard model, etc.}
Recording method: {audacity, Zoom, digital to PC, etc.}
Constructive technical feedback wanted: {Yes/No}
Additional Info: {Your thoughts on the piece, what you had for lunch, etc.}

The due date for all submissions is 9:00 pm US EASTERN STANDARD TIME on February 14, 2017.

Did I mention that the 9:00 pm deadline was firm?

Think "consistency of concrete." smirk

By submitting a piece to the recital, you are certifying that it is a recording of your own performance.

Again, the recital order will be presented in the order the pieces were received, so the sooner you send in your piece, the higher you will be on the list! You can revise your entries on the template (e.g., thoughts about your piece, adding YouTube links, and the like) any time and not lose your place in the recital queue, but if you resubmit your recording at any time, for any reason, you will be bumped to the end of the list.

An AB Forum Recital FAQ thread exists that contains this and other information. Should you have any questions at all on what to do or how to do it, do not hesitate to ask. Remember, there are NO stupid questions, as we have a steady flow of new members in AB Forum for whom this is their first recital, so your questions will probably help to eliminate other members’ problems. Please ask away! smile

Let's all go out and brave that Red Dot and share a lot of beautiful music! thumb

No, there's 18 submissions already - you snooze, you loose.

I'll probably be number 61...

Hi Sam,
I have not recorded in a long time. I went to the link How to Record Your Piano and it did not open. I have a Zoom recorder and Audacitry is loaded on my Mac. I probably need to update that software, and need a refresher on How To.
Thanks,
Salzdt

I submitted this time; I wasn't planning on it, because my favorite pieces on which I'm working weren't quite ready, but I picked something from a couple months ago and recorded last night.....glad that's over smile. It wasn't my best but I just had to do it and move on. Can't wait to listen to everyone's work!

My submission went through twice - not sure what happened, can you fix it ? :S

When the server got upgraded, I guess we lost that file somewhere. I am not an expert at recording, but this is what I do with my zoom and audacity:

If you have a zoom, then set it up near the piano and hit record. When you are happy with the recording (I know, that never happens), load that file to your computer. I do that by taking out the memory card and inserting it in my laptop, which has a slot for cards. Then open the file with audacity, trim the ends so you just have a clean recording, then export as an mp3 file. I think you need the LAME mp3 library loaded into audacity to do that. That's all you need for the recital - an mp3 file.

Anybody want to volunteer to write a new recording guide?

Medden, if you're reading this... your submission is lacking your mp3 file. Let me know if you're having a problem uploading it and need me to do that for you.

[whistles in air, looks obliviously around]

I don't have time to write such a guide right now, although I think it would be very useful! Here's a couple of links I found doing a quick "zoom audacity how to" google search that might be useful:

Sam,
Thank you, I will have to play around with the Zoom since it's been awhile. I still have Audacity on my Mac from my last recording. I will have to see if it needs updating. Looks like I will need more time and will have to wait until the May recital.
Thanks again

I vaguely recalled a guide that ShiroKuro compiled years ago; I've just dug around and found the thread:

Zoom guide

I know it helped me.

I hadn't realized one could see the submissions before the recital goes live. Where/how?

And by the way, I love Songs without Words, too. Might submit one next time.

I recorded op 102 no 4 a few months ago but was disappointed with it. Listening again it's not as bad as I remember.

woo... go team mendelssohn. we need to beat chopin for number of entries. op 102 no 4 sounds quite a tough one.

And out of the window goes my resolution to avoid well-known and overplayed pieces... well at least it's as short as it can get whistle

Even those of us who have recorded many times can still screw things up! Did several takes of my piece this morning and got something I thought would be OK. When I loaded the file off the Zoom it was totally silent. Seems I somehow changed it to record from external mics. I have no external mics, so - I have a wonderful recording of silence!

Oh well.

That Cage piece was about the sounds of the audience reacting to the pianist not playing anything, so I ought to add some sighs, rustling of candy wrappers, coughing, and then laughter when they find out I screwed up - then submit it to the recital. My best playing ever!

In at 41 with Haydn's Little Serenade, hate to miss Feb ..it a birthday month! smile

PS even though it's a short piece , I had a difficult time recording. The laptop, or my cables aren't as tight, and that results in panning of left and right speaker sound volume. It took a while of fidgeting with connections but it worked finally. I should've kept my old dell , the new one is j.....!$2^%!!

Question:
Suppose someone is playing a piece of old Classical music on an electronic keyboard with the instrument setting on "organ", "harpsichord" or "clavichord" would this be acceptable? Or does the submission has to be on an acoustic piano?

Check my submission in the last recital - harpsichord. And I wasn't the first by any means. We've had all types of submissions over the years.

Mine was soooo slooow I was never going to make it smile but seriously , for me this is the easiest recital ever, silence. Sometimes these things come around a bit too soon to get that Mojo going again, and I am having too much fun with unfinished pieces and not in a recording mood to get sidetracked, so I want a break from this recital for a change, after pretty much making most of them for a few years, that break feels welcome.

No doubt I'll have a listen to all the wonderful creations.

Monica K, do I get a cookie for my prediction of what you submitted ? laugh

I think I'm going to resubmit mine. There is a part where I think I play too fast, sounds thrashing. I just did another recording. Although I'm probably being way too picky. My ears don't hear well anyway. Someone posted a test over in the digital forum and I got them all wrong laugh

Taken care of, both!

I'm not sure, either, unless y'all accidentally hit the "next" button twice... but no biggie. thumb

Also two times. I think it has to do with the flash play button to listen to the submission. When clicked safari (in my case) resends the 'form'. I also have two magic codes.

There are a lot of pieces from “new to me” composers I am looking forward to listening to!
Posted By: Monica K. Re: Recital 49 --- Call For Submissions - 02/14/18 10:30 PM
Took care of your duplicate, too, chopinholic.

Just fair warning to y'all: The recital will get posted tonight, but possibly in fits and starts, and maybe not until fairly late. UK plays Auburn starting at 9:00 pm, and as I am no fair weather fan, I plan to watch the game. grin
Posted By: cmb13 Re: Recital 49 --- Call For Submissions - 02/14/18 10:45 PM
I have a little apprehension about this one. I rushed to get my piece in but was not thrilled with what I submitted. It was the only thing I had near-ready, but it wasn't a perfect take. I don't totally love the piece, so just said the heck with it, here it is for better or for worse.

I'm working on two more now that I really love and am trying to polish. Maybe for next recital. I am really looking forward to hearing everyone else though!
Most of us knows we won't make it to the podium, even honorable mention. Like the Olympics, it's the spirit that counts. Every contestant has a passion for music. It's good exposure to get his/her name out to a wider audience. Even professional musicians have their humble beginnings...
Posted By: dddaaannn Re: Recital 49 --- Call For Submissions - 02/15/18 02:40 AM
I literally submitted mine within the last few seconds before the deadline. I forgot what day it was and rushed home to record. Just a token first-time submission and not my best, but I promised myself I would participate.

The deadline passed while I was submitting an updated description. Not sure if the site accepted the update. I'll try to be better prepared for the next one. smile
Posted By: Monica K. Re: Recital 49 --- Call For Submissions - 02/15/18 04:16 AM
Well, that's a wrap, folks. And just in case you're curious, UK lost by 10 points in a game that they could've won. frown We may well be headed for the NIT this year. The horror!

On the positive side, I haven't listened to all the submissions yet, but so far it's shaping up to be yet another excellent recital! thumb
