Best way to remove a hammer butt? - 02/08/16 11:10 PM

I need to remove the butt from one hammer in a piano, and frankly I've never had to do that before. The hammer head and shank are perfectly fine still, I just need to know how to unglue the shank from the butt.
Thanks!

It's helpful to have a removal tool. It fastens to shank and is threaded so that when you turn the threads it pulls the shank relatively evenly with some leverage advantage.
Take a knife and trim any exposed glue collar, hook up extractor and put a little tension on it, a couple drops water at glue joint, warm up butt with a heat gun and don't burn the wood and just a little more torque it should slide out easily.l when glue softens.
If it breaks inside the butt it's a bit more effort different procedure but you can avoid that by being careful.

Also, if you intend to replace the buck skin as well, a hair straightener can be clasped over the butt to provide heat. If fact, you don't really need a removal tool for pulling. The heat alone and a little moisture is sufficient to soften the glue enough to twist the shank out by hand after about a minute.

A couple drops of vinegar will also do wonders loosening up hide glue. In fact, if you're replacing the butt anyway (which it sounds like you are), you can soak that whole end of the hammer shaft in vinegar for a few minutes and the shaft should pop out quite easily.

Should the vinegar residue weaken the join of new glue?

No, not if it's cleaned off and allowed to dry thoroughly.
