On Thursday, October 1st, The Piano Company at White Flint will be hosting three free workshops between 10AM-2PM. The workshops will include:
Life Shaper or Artist Maker?
Every teacher of piano wants to have a significant impact on the world, but the ways in which we view the purpose of our teaching can either increase or constrain our impact on students, communities and society. We will discuss two of the “lenses†teachers often use to view their role – the Life Shaper and the Artist Maker – and explain how the proper use of these lenses can empower every teacher to maximize his/her impact on the world.

Seminar: Classical Improvisation
Those who wish to explore improvisation are often encouraged to study jazz. But is that really the best way to learn improvisation? Couldn’t the classically trained pianist learn to improvise in the classical style? This session is for the classical musician. It will explain an enjoyable and systematic approach to improvisation built entirely upon the elements of traditional piano study.
There will also be a short session on the workings of the piano and lunch will be served.
The sessions will be conducted by Brian Chung, chair of the MTNA Foundation Fund Development Committee and a 2004 MTNA Foundation Fellow. A frequent conference speaker, he is also co-author of Improvisation at the Piano: A Systematic Approach for the Classically Trained Pianist (Alfred Publishing 2007), co-author of the Recreational Music Making Handbook (Alfred 2009) and author of Expressions of Faith: Eight Inventive Explorations of Classic Hymns for Solo Piano (Alfred 2008).
All of this in addition to being Senior Vice President of Kawai America Corporation. He's a brilliant fellow!
