Anyone play any Mompou on here?

Recently inspired by new Volodos plays Mompou disc I'm currently trying to learn a few pieces which appear on his CD.

I've taken a liking to this composer, currently working on no 1 and 2 of his 3 Landscapes, no 1 of the Dialogues. Can nearly play the "young girls in garden" and prelude no 12. Very atmospheric music, comes alive more when it's night and your in the right mood, at least for me it does.

I try to play stuff not many do i want to try and get away from same old stuff everyone seems to play.

Some of the music is hard to obtain.

I LOVE mompou! Try to get a hold of his own performances - there are such subtle things going on in his playing.

Great, what pieces do you play of Mompou?

I do like the Dialogues I'm learning no 1, do you play any of his Musica Callada?

I'm very fond of his variations on a theme of Chopin. He also wrote wonderful songs.

Hi, daoc2009 -- Yes, very much so! You can get quite an excellent sampling of his piano music from Salabert. It was issued shortly after his death (in 1987), and includes the entire Musica Callada and his one extended piano work, the Variations on a Theme of Chopin, along with Canciones y Danzas 9 - 12 and several of his earlier efforts while living in Paris. Highly recommended!

Incidentally, I listened to the Volodos transcription, but didn't like it much -- he just "gilds the lily" too much for my taste. You just don't mess with a Mompou composition!

Some other IMO terrific Mompou players are de Larrocha, Hough, and Ciccolini.

In a recent interview Hough says Mompou was a brilliant technician...not in terms of his finger technique(which was not great)but in terms of the colors he was able to produce. Hough also says that he considers his own Mompou recording to be one of his best.
