hey there im preparing for practising a chopin etude in which my teacher first gave me an assignment to train my Fingers 4 and 5 with chromatic scales.

I have no problem going up really fast but going down im getting stuck. There is no flow in it, sounds like a horse galopping (like 12 123 instead of 12123).

I use this fingering from starting point Ais/Bes:
345, 34, 345, 34, 34

That's just a terribly hard etude! (I assume you mean Op. 10 #2) -- and I'm surprised that a teacher would give an exercise like that.

If anyone has some trick for it that they think they can convey in an internet post, I'm all ears too. ha
Of course your teacher is in the best position to answer the question, and I doubt that any of us could come close to giving an answer that would be as relevant.

Just follow this link and then scroll down to #2:
I would play a chromatic scale (from Bb):
2 3 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 1 2 3 4

It would be easier if you could show an example of the score. In my opinion, it depends on where the scale is going and where it is coming from

Ahhhh, sorry. My bad, I thought the question was concerning how to play a chromatic scale, now I understand that's it is about the Chopin etude. My suggestion then is to use the fingering that Chopin has written.

Remo, I created an exercise many years ago that tax the 4th and 5th fingers. I'll use this as a warm up when playing a strange piano. I didn't include the fingerings but you'll start with 2 and 4 in each hand.

You'll need the Scorch plug in for Sibelius and the link is included at the bottom of the page.

This is a great exercise to practice in all keys as well (and works also for whole tone and diminished scales).

Have fun but don't over do this. As with most exercises, this should be played very slowly.


(this added ... I made a modification that allows printing of this if you wish. The default setting appears not to allow that.)
I'm not convinced by all the 3-4s. I'd only use that for chromatic thirds.

I only take 3 before pairs of white notes (or after, when going down). 3 comes on E flat and B flat with 4 and 5 for the two consecutive white keys. Everything else follows 4 for black keys and 5 for white keys. This fingering is also very good for true legato octaves (if you have a big hand).
