Nice photo. Are the boy's learning to play?

Mazer, they have a full sized keyboard downstairs as well as drums & a guitar but don't seem all that interested.

However we're going to try the youngest one with some kind of music lessons when he is 5. It may be piano or we may try guitar because he'll strum it on occasion & make up songs.

The older one tried drum lessons for a little while but became disinterested quickly. However he is very competitive, so if little brother takes up an instrument, we are hoping that he may follow suit.

I have a Schulze Pollman 190 in the mahagony briar finish (those are the inside panels). The outside color is just regular mahogany and the boxes are lined with a walnut trim.

The dog's bed is a result of acoustics experiments. He also happens to love it under the piano. Its his own little "cave".

The dog is 12 and losing his hearing, so it doesn't bother him when I start practicing. If only I could say the same for the hearing folks around. :rolleyes:

What are you talking about it's not pretty? It's a nice old piano. A piano doesn't have to shine to be pretty. It's pretty in it's own way. It's got some history, and a little nostalgic behind it. Thanks for taking the time to share your pictures.

Where are your photos?

Well to be honest Mazersteven, I expected to post them well before this but I have yet to receive delivery of my soup to nuts rebuilt vintage Chickering. It has been delayed 4 times over the past 2 months for various reasons, mostly scheduling. I was expecting it this past Thursday until I received a call from the rebuilder that it would be delayed another week due to separation of a small section of the veneer on the lid which had to be re-glued and laquered. He wanted to wait another week before delivery to give the laquer time to harden up a bit. I'm expecting delivery this coming Saturday. I have my fingers crossed that I don't receive a late Sunday call like I did last week delaying it yet again.

I see you have no carpet under piano, just hardwood flooring. I have read where a carpet helps the soundboard, and acoustics. Have you tried one or not. I know it's hard to cover up hardwood floors, they are so beautiful. But if it helps the sound of the piano.

You guess it - it's a NY Steinway. I actually preferred it over the Hamburgs only because Hamburgs tended to be a bit too brilliant.

The ones with the rug under the piano are my home. The ones in the huge room are in Classical Grands storage building where they kept it for me until delivery. Yes - it is me. What do you mean about moving the rug? Do you mean directly under the piano with the front legs on it too? I have considered that, but its so HEAVY! I had the movers put it that way, but I wasn't sure.

Yes, it is a 2003 NY Steinway B. I preferred it to the D so went with the B even though I believe the D looks cooler. Meh, I am playing the thing more than I am looking at it.

Here it goes.

I was one of those people that didn't know any other make other then Yamaha, and Steinway. I have never played, or even looked at pianos until about 2 weeks ago. I have always wanted to play one, but never learned. I have always wanted to see a piano in a hotel lobby, or a mall, or any public place, and just sit down start playing, and get a crowd. I have always wanted to do that.

I was driving around with my wife one day (04/17/05) and stopped in a piano store to look at the Yamaha Disklavier piano's 5.3'. Thinking it would be cool to have one play on it's own, and I can play. I researched on the Yamaha web-site to know enough about them, but not knowing anything at all at the same time, if you know what I mean. I didn't know piano's sounded different from small sizes to big. I didn't know one brand from another sounded different. I knew nothing. And I didn't know how much a piano cost. Holy Tolito's was I in for a shock. After 45 minutes of the women demo'ng the Yamaha I ask how much. She told me 38.5. I thought $3850 and was like "write the check". When she wrote the order up and I had to pay I realized it was $38,500 I almost past out. I was so embarrassed. I felt like a fool. I couldn't find the toilet to flush myself out of there.

Well the women said, why do you want the Yamaha anyway with the computer, and showed me some others. (Pearl River, Petrof) The Petrof was more then I was ready to drop, and I didn't like the sound of the Pearl River. I purchased a Nordiska 185 Imperial Mahogony they had. I liked the sound, and all the things they told me about it.
So after 1 hour and 15 minutes I was a piano owner.
That's my story on how I became a piano owner. Not the way your supposed to do it. O well. I think I did good.

Very fitting apple, nice piano. The B was broken in over the course of a year, but it was very tempermental at first and going out of tune quickly. She has gotten better now and plays like a dream with an outstanding bass balanced with an equally pleasing treble.

My parents bought it in the 60s and it lived at my grandmother's house for about 30 years after that. I inherited it and moved it across country about 10 years ago. It was the first "piano" I learned to play on.

Amazing it was 100 years old when your parents bought it.

It turns out they didn't know any better. Even then it wasn't a very good instrument. But, it was pretty, and it said "Steinway."

Yes we did, my wife saw it at a small church up in Maine that was having a tag sale one Saturday. Noone put a bid on it so she went up to the Rector after the sale was all over and made an offer. He told her that he would need to run her offer (which was lets say only a few hundred dollars) passed the trustee's. Three weeks later they called and told her to come get it. We had it for approx. 8 years before it finally needed major work. Knowing absolutly nothing about pianos, we had no idea what we even had. We called our tech in to tune it and he told us it was time for major work. My wife made the comment to him after he told her how much restoration work it needed, that I could haul it to the dump. He told her that " Some people consider this a German Stienway and it is well worth rebuilding" That started the whole rebuild process. As far as the story behind it goes, we were told that a wealthy woman in Maine purchased it and had it shipped over to the US because she thought that it was a better instrument than the piano's being produced out of New York even though by this time Theodore Steinweg had sold the company to Grotrian, Hellfrich and Shultz and come to New York. We are still trying to track down more of it's history.

You have the back wheels on the hardwood. Will the weight damage the floor? And I've heard that the sound is better with a rug under the whole piano. Have you tried it?

Derick not sure I saw the wood floors last time you posted a photo of your Imperial. Are you able to handle all that sound with the top up? How big is the room? I was considering putting in wood floors in my piano room but I am not sure I want to now that I have had my D for a few months. The volumn might get to be too much. Its pretty loud even with wall to wall. I will post photos maybe tonight.

Actually all the wheels are on a thin, but very stiff piece of wood stained to match the floor. The wood is under the rug for the front wheels.

I think, and this is just my opinion, that when you put carpeting under a piano you are muffling a lot of the overtones. When people do put a rug under the piano and state that it sounds better, I think it is because the brightness of the piano is cut down. Bosendorfers are typically not bright pianos.

It's a model 290, not a 280 (which is also a nice piano).

The room is 19x20 with 9' cathedral ceilings that top out at 14'. I don't find the sound too much at all - and I do not like loud pianos. I could really pound on it and then, yes, it would be too loud. But under normal playing conditions it's an ideal environment.

My previous piano was a 7'4" Falcone - made in America essentially a copy of a Steinway. At that time I had wall-to-wall carpeting. With the original Renner hammers I had a lot of volume. I later put on Abel hammers and the volume was cut considerably. I think the Falcone with Abel hammers would have sounded better on the wood floor, but I think it might have been too much with Renner hammers.

9'6" WOW My room is a little bigger then yours, and I'm thinking my 6'1" is going to take up a lot of room. My ceilings go to 15'. It will be a carpeted room.

Derick, I believe you are quite correct about the overtones. I am hearing less overtones than I did when the piano was in Steinway Hall, still it sounds great. Unfortunately I have only 8 foot ceilings. I think the height of your ceilings are the ticket for a concert grand. Do you know if anyone out there has a concert grand with 8 foot ceilings and wood floors. I am tempted to go with wood and then use an area rug. Sure would like to know if someone else went through this and what the results were.

The height of the ceilings probably does have something to do with it. It's hard to say. I guess the only thing you can do is try it (kind of expensive though) and then put down an area rug as you mentioned if it is too loud. Or you could have the piano voiced to be a bit mellower. I believe there was someone who had a Bosendorfer 280 with 8' ceilings but I don't think he's posted here in a while and I can't remember his ID. He never mentioned a volume problem but I don't think you can go by that. Every piano make will sound different in the same room, and the same piano will sound different in different rooms. There are certainly a lot of people with 6' pianos here who are always trying to quiet them down. Personally, I think wood floors are a must and the piano should be voiced to sound good in the room.

Mazer, don't worry, I guarantee you the piano will shrink after you get it. I thought mine was enormous when I first got it even though it is only a little more than 2' longer than my previous piano. Now it just looks kind of average size. What are you getting?

Wow, that's beautiful. I really like the finish and the music stand (you can probably tell I'm a bug about music stands). I've never played, or even seen, a Nordiska but I hear great things about them. Congratulations.

The piano was just voiced so its not going to get quiet unless I stuff some blankets in it. Even then it would probably have a boom to it. Actually I'm not worried so much about volumn as reflection. Agree they shrink. The D doesn't seem so enormous anymore but I do not wish for a larger piano thats for sure.

LJC I'm not sure if putting it at an angle would help with such a big room opening into another. But it will make some sort of a difference. I know distance from the wall and the angle definitely changed the way the Falcone sounded (which was on carpet).

I admit it might not be the deal of the century, but a very plausible price in some markets. New Yamaha list price on a DC1M4 in any wood finish is now considerably over 40K.

Confession time. I don't actually own a piano. . . just an electronic keyboard. It's a Yamaha Pf-15, and has a very sensitive action. It doesn't really sound much like a piano, though, because it's got the old-time fm-generated sounds instead of digital samples. It does have nice Rhodes and harpsichord voices, though.

It doesn't matter to me if you have a 9' Concert Grand, or a Keyboard. We are all one big piano family here. Some family members need to remember to take there medicine. But all in all, a good bunch.

What you can't see is the evidence this piano was used as a plant stand, including potting soil and dried leaves in the action! But the price was so low we had to buy it.

Thanks for your kind complements. Yes, it's a Mason & Hamlin A in High Polish Bubinga Finish. Though I do appreciate the classy traditional look of high polish black or satins, I was mystically drawn to the Mahagony, Bubinga and Rosewood colored pianos during my search. That and the deep powerful sound of my particular Mason A just yelled out "Take me Home!"

Mazersteven... that is the original cabinet from 1923 so yes, it does have a few scratches here and there. However, scratches don't effect the tonal quality!!

When I play with the lid down, it doesn't appear to bother the rest of the family. There is a lot more volume, of course, when I play with the lid up and I only do that when I beg to be heard!!!

It's difficult taking a pic in this room and capturing the true color of the wall. It appears bright in this pic but it's truly not.
It's a very calming plum tone!!

I will look forward to seeing the pics.

Cool! and great piano! I am hoping to get my piano quartet to have a few rehearsals at my house as well. It will be REALLY tight. This is the reason I haven't put my SK-5 on casters--I hope there won't be any harm in moving it a few inches here and there (it has double wheels). If it doesn't work, we will just have to put the cellist in the next room. What are you working on?

The exterior isn't perfect, but it's pretty close -- and the finish is completely original. Whoever had it before us maintained it very well. There are some fingernail scratches above the key's, but I could care less about that. I love the piano. Oh, and the bench is also the original.

Thanks! I am still in MA, and still in Lexington. I actually moved just around the corner. We are officially staying in Lexington, and the piano officially has it's own room. It is a new experience, and I'm loving it. Over the years, the piano has always been in the living room, so I had to put up with kicking my sisters out or just playing over the TV. Now the TV is in the family room and I have the living room all to myself. It's a much more comfortable environment -- not to mention that the piano sounds great in the room.

Fortunately, I didn't pay a single dollar for the piano, or the house -- my parents deal with that part, I just play. The house is a split level, so you step down from the bedrooms to get to the living room, which is on the same level as the kitchen, dining, and family room. And I know the light's ugly, but it's sort of temporary I suppose. For now, it works, and seeing as the piano is my studio for most of my free time, function is most important.

Nice piano. My case is also in great shape...has a few "personality marks", but I love that. I also retained the original bench...am using it near the front entrance so people can sit down to put their shoes on. It belongs near it's "mom". :rolleyes:

Beautiful piano. I've played on a few old Chickerings, including one from I believe the late 1800's, and found them to be very nice pianos.

Monster M&H - I don't really know any history specifically on my piano... All I know is it's from 1929, and was maintained VERY well until 2003. Everything was original down to the hammers and strings. The humidity must have been relatively constant wherever it was kept, which is hard to believe considering the drastic daily changes in MA weather. The hammers were significantly worn in, but I don't know if it was from intense playing or just the effect of 80 years in someones house. Oh and I have an interesting little story... While my piano was being rebuilt, I stopped by a nice little piano shop in Boston. There I found another rebuilt Mason & Hamlin that was pretty nice. Then I looked at the serial number, and it was 3 digits away from mine! Mine is 39379, and that one was 39381. What are the chances? It's funny that the only two Mason & Hamlins I had played on were sitting next to each other in the factory 80 years ago.

To cool. I sold a 1953 K3 Allard so I could purchase mine. I meet the guy on the Yahoo/Allard group and we emailed back and forth a bit, found out we both live in Canton, MI...not more than a 1/2 mile from each other. He also has a K3, after looking at mine, he decided to purchase mine...are you ready?? My Vin # 3175...his 3176...again, what are the chances. We have both lived there at least 5 yrs and never seen either car.

Hi Mazer and Sophial, thanks, the paint on the piano room walls and parlour is Ralph Lauren Suede. It has a sandy mixture added to the paint to give the texture. Nice to read a positive thread.

Is that your bench, also? If so, did the dealer include it, or did you buy it separately?

Bench comes with the CW190. It is a Jansen J3. I think it wholesales for about $400 by itself. I am glad I didn't have to factor in for that.

The bench is super heavy and rugged. I think it would support Oscar Peterson or Uncle Cootie with no problem. :-)

Can I ask what Serial #?.. Mine is back on page 3, near the bottom. I think mine is #28163. Velopresto has one real close to that. I see you also have the original bench. I have mine also, but purchased an artists and use the org. bench for seating/storage...also comes in handy for playing with the nieces and nephews.

I really like the accent trim on the bottom of the rim...although it does collect more dust.

Comparing this Mason to brand new Mason's I've played, it actually does quite well. Unlike most older pianos I've had the experience of trying out, the higher notes on this piano really sing maybe even more than some of the new ones. Where it is not so great is the last top octave. The hammers are worn out and the strings are old so those notes don't come out very clean. Another area that I feel is lacking even with the new Masons (Model A) is the bass. The bass sounds quite nasally and without much fundamental. Also as I play down the keyboard and cross over from plain strings to the wound bass notes, the difference is very apparent. Don't know if this can be fixed or not.

This Mason was rebuilt in the 70's and they must have painted over the serial. The previous owner (a piano teacher) said that it was built in 1919. His parents had owned it had he inherited it from them. He decided to sell it because his piano tech said the action was worn out and would need complete rebuilding. So when I bought this piano, next to it was a baby grand Kawaii. He played the Kawaii and instantly, I could tell that there was no comparison in sound. The Mason completely knocked the socks off the Kawaii. I don't know if he knew or not but I didn't say anything.

As I mentioned, this piano was rebuilt 30 years ago. From casual observation, the work done was mediocre. For example, I can see sanding marks underneath the refinishing job. The new damper felts were not properly cut to fit the angles of the damper heads. The plate finishing job was very poor, probably from a spray can. And the tuning pins were all loose. Some of the bass notes could not even hold tension. The tuning pins have since all have been tightened with I think super glue and it now holds tune very well. Despite all of this, it still is a very nice sounding piano.

I have seen the serial number stamped into all the legs, at least on mine. Being my first grand, I'm still learning about all the inherent nuances. Still a whole lot nicer than my Janssen spinet. (donated to my niece and play it every few weeks...trying to influence her kids.)

We got our new Schimmel today, so I have to put a few pictures here (and I think it sounds even better than it looks!). It shows that a 6' grand can fit in a 1100 s.f. condo!

Actually, it's a good thing I couldn't post my piano pic. There is no way it would measure up to those last two instruments. They are pretty darn nice if I do say so myself.

After reading through recommendations on this forum, I went to visit Cunningham Piano in Philadelphia and it was the best experience ever. Rich Galasinni is an abolute joy to work with.

It's not your typical pump and dump piano operation. No shoddy salesman. Plan to spend a few hours if you are gonna go there because you'll have a fabulous time and lose track of time. Make sure you ask to tour the factory and look for this _monster_ Steinway D they are working on.

After my visit to Cunningham, I finally get to join the piano club like you guys. After playing several pianos, the one pictured below captured me and I couldn't stay away from it. I played Estonias and those are very, very impressive. I played my first Mason and Hamlin and the bass was what everyone siad of it but when all was said and done, this rebuilt Steinway was a keeper. I'm surprised because I was looking to get a Mason and Hamlin but after playing this instrument I was done.

It's a rosewood Steinway B made in 1894 and recently rebuilt with nice heavy action (love those).






I'll post some audio/video of it when I get a chance. It is very expressive and has a lovely tone.

Alex - I love the Bluthner. When I was shopping for a piano I never even tried them, since at the time they didn't have a dealer in NYC (i bought maybe a month before FH got theirs in). I've since played a few and they are fabulous!

What a gem, Esteven. Pianos don't come much more gorgeous. The room it's in is most fitting, too.

Alex, I played on an old (circa 1900) Bluetner at the Fredericks Historical Piano museum. It was a perfect Debussy piano. I lack the technical knowledge to explain this, but somehow the tones melted together beautifully in a style very conducive to impressionism. I wonder if this characteristic continues in today's Bluetners.

And, Sonata, your Schimmel is exquisite. I was shopping for Schimmels once upon a time, and don't recall seeing that style. I like it much more than some of the ultra gloss, turned leggged models that seemed to prevail during my search. For some reason, the style reminds me of Pleyel.

What kind of tenor are you playing? I changed to a Keilwerth SX90R in black nickel with a Lawton 8*BB mpc a few years ago and it is exactly what I was always looking for. My soprano is a Yanagisawa S9930 in solid sterling silver which produces one of the sweetest tones out there.

As far as the piano goes - your Nordiska is beautiful, I'm sure you will use it well. I still have a few months before I take delivery of my 214CS. Then I can really start to practice, practice, practice.

Physics and math - awesome. Two of my favorite studies before taking the path to my current profession (pediatric dentist).

Hey saxguy, i've got a Bentley (sax, not car - i wish!). Here's a picture of her though the clarinet is missing this time. Sorry it's so big, i can't figure out how to make them smaller. I'm hoping to upgrade her sometime in the future but what with the new piano i cant really financially justify it at the moment.

As for recordings, i recently found some software on the internet for recording so i tried it and the mic on my computer is too far away from the piano (they're in the same room) so it comes out way too quiet. So the plan is to buy a new mic i can plug into the usb and take anywear so then hopefully i can post some recordings in the very near future.

The Kemble is less than a month old which is why it is still so shiny. The look has already changed though since taking the pictures. There are now photos of 3 kids on it and toys strewn around, even the odd score sheet to be found. I'm considering attaching bubblewrap to the bench and lower part of the piano to prevent scuffs from toy prams and falling lego towers

And I was in Oxford for a year and Loughborough the rest of the time.

wow .... this fooled me. I didn't take you serious when you said this was digital until I saw the led display. How is the action on these instruments ?

The action is a bit more light than clavinova, but it is very comfortable and there are wooden keys

Congratulations for your new RX2, it looks very nice.

I'm contemplating of getting this as well and I was comparing between Yamaha and Kawai, but Yamaha is more expensive for similar size. I did a try at the showroom last weekend, but they didn't have the RX2, but RX3 and GE30. I was already impressed by the GE30 which is able to sound mellow when playing soft and sounding metallic bright when playing loud. I didn't get that feel with other cheaper brands, many of them were too bright, which i didn't like.

Yes there is a difference, the sound is more spacious with top up, but the difference is not so big like the acustic one because the loudspeaker are situated not only on the soundboard, but there are also 4 tweeter at the right and left of the keyboard and 1 subwoofer and 1 mid range under the body of the piano, so the sound isn't totally locked when the top is down

Okay, here comes pics of my poor little orphan piano.... This is my piano that I rescued from the goodwill orphanage. The first pic is of it's original finish (well, semi-original- I forgot to take the "before" pic until after I had taped up and started sanding). The next pics are of it after I refinished it. I think it turned out well, especially considering I had never finished or refinished anything before. It sounds really good, it's just due for a tuning. The keys are all in really great shape. I HATE the vinyl- wish it was all wood finish, but oh well. One day I will have the funds for the grand piano of my dreams :-) It may not be fantastic looking or sounding, but the joy it brings me is priceless! Also here is a recent pic of me, my wife, and my sons.

it must have been pretty bad because we sold it for 50 dollars and bought an Acrosonic.... a 'good' piano for a budding pianist. I don't remember at all the name.. It was quite crackled. I think the photo was taken 67 - 69. I never noticed that is was bad.. (i vaguely remember it being a 'Chicago' piano.

It sure looks like a 73" ceiling scraper.
And yes, that picture of you is cute. You look very determined to master that beast.

Didn't Bush & Lane make pianos in Chicago?

I'd swear that's where the very tall 100+ year old Bush & Lane Mahagony upright I play at one of the facilities says it was from.That one has hand carved legs, and though no one has tuned it in years it sounds pleasing. Has a big boomy bass to it that makes you want to jump off the bench when you first play a low bass note. Action on the thing is pretty comfortable; but could use a bit of work on a few keys. The ivory key tops are worn some and no longer feel slick.

I wonder what the legs looked like.

I don't mind the crazed finish.

My tuner doesn't mind crazed original finishes either; he likes that antique look.

Acrosonics aren't all that bad for practice pianos; I got a chance to play one at a dealer and I found it to be surprisingly comfortable to practice on and the price was very affordable.
I was told by the dealer that many teachers in school music programs liked the acrosonics.

But I was holding out for something special and of a professional upright size. Plus I find the name ACROSONIC kind of strange, reminds me of space rockets and jet air planes.

Thanks guys for the compliments....and Mazer, it doesn't show well in the pic, but my tie actually was red, just a darker red than the boys' ties. It didn't exactly match everyone else perfectly, but it matched better than the picture would lead you to believe :-)

You know, I was once on my way to visit that organ factory - in the dead of winter - but was driven back by SNOW. Imagine that.

This summer I am going there with my choir. Except we will go in the summer.

Probably more fun in the summer. Will you be playing organ? Going anywhere besides Denmark?

I don't know if I will be playing an organ, but here is a list of places we are going:
Copenhagen, Hillerod, Helsingor, Mordrup, Roskilde, Odense, Abenra, sonderborg, Logumloster, Haderslev, Thisted, Aarhus, Kalundborg,and Nykobing.

You should play the organ! Especially at Helsingør, Roskilde, Odense, Haderslev, and the big one at Åarhus.

Of course, Åbenrå is the home of Marcussen.

Also be on the lookout for organs by Frobenius.

I think it is Mar-koo-sen. Go lightly on the "r" - better to flip it than to make a curled American sounding R. I think the syllables are evenly accented - perhaps a Dane can help us out here!

I will have to ask the director of music at the church the organ is at. He goes to denmark every now and then, and after all, it is his organ.

I'm doing fine. I've moved my family back into our house back in October. There was still things being worked on, up until January. Plumbing, Electrical, Appliances, stuff like that. I still need to take a lesson, or two to get me on track to learning how to play my piano. For New Years Eve I through a party with about 30-35 people. I hired someone to play for a few hours during the party. The guy stayed playing until midnight. It's sounded awesome. Thanks for asking and remembering.

A great combination! We have a 3 year old, an 8 year old, and an 11 year old. Sometimes my male (the 8 year old) will get bored with my practicing, and he makes his displeasure known by a loud, exaggerated sigh as he settles to the floor (it sounds like someone dropped a 100 lb sack of potatoes from a height of several feet). If I continue, he soon repeats his ‘I am SO bored’ commentary. Finally I give up and go put him in the car - shortly I’ll leave with him, which is what he wants. They are amazing characters.

Here is my piano collection. The bechstein has been rebuilt with new strings and refinish. The ivories are perfect. It was Built in 1901. The hinges on the piano look like they came from a treasure chest on sponge bob
The heintzman has new strings hammers refinish,. Stripping the legs took 12 hours, but this baby is a pretty sight. This piano was built 1899. Not a single crack in the sound board. While buffing the ivories I came across a key with all the tuning dates from 1926 thru the late '30's. Makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up thinking about how long ago that was.

The Heintzman is quite the showy upright! I love how the front leans open for the music as well as letting the sound escape. Wish modern uprights did this. And the cabinetry details!

Can you imagine using those candles on the C. Bech to play by?

Lily: I did all the stripping(I do not like working with strong chemicals even with a mask), sanding, and staining. The spraying(5 coats of lacquer)was done by my friend with whom I am apprenticing. I did the regulating, key bushings, buffing the keytops, hammers, dampers. The same applies to the Bechstein. I am currently taking the Randy Potter Course of Piano Technology and hope to be able to tune. I do a lot of stripping and sanding for my friend to pay for instruction in regulation and other aspects of piano rebuilding but I am surrounded by beautiful old pianos and get to listen to jazz all day. What could be better than that!
I would recommend not lighting the candles on the Bechstein if you have big hair or sway a lot when playing.

Great looking pianos everyone. Here is a pictures of ours. The make is Traugott Berndt and it measures 6 feet.

We are currently looking for more information about this piano. The best we have come up with is that is was made in Germany in the mid-late 1800's. It is in excellent condition and previously it was housed at one of the embassies here in Ottawa.

We acquired the piano about 8 years ago here in Ottawa. The store where we purchased it said it had been in the Austrian embassy here and they recently traded it in on a Steinway.

We had been looking for a baby grand for our new house and just happened upon this one. The person at the store was showing us used Steinways and seemed to have noticed we turned pale when she quoted the $80,000 price tags. She mentioned they had this one in the basement.

Nothing against the traditional black grand piano, but we were looking for something a bit different and this one fit the bill!

It is in amazing shape considering how old it is. I don't know what work, if any, the store did on it, but they said it was minimal.

Man, All i have is a T121 Upright. A tiny piano compared to these grands.

I bought the Bechstein first, back in 1997, the first time I could realistically afford a nice grand. Like most people when they're shopping, I played probably hundreds of pianos, and only really liking a few.

At the time, I worked for an airline, an unusual luxury which allowed me to travel very cheaply, and sample lots of distant instruments.

I was shopping for a large grand, 7' and up, from a high-quality manufacturer. I considered lots of brands, but had a soft spot for Mason & Hamlins, so that's what I was mainly looking for, a BB or CC.

I was generally unimpressed with what was available--there were lots of mediocre pianos, and a few really nice ones that weren't for sale.

Petrof was getting good reviews then, so I went to the local dealer who had a 7'9" model II, to judge for myself. It was a nice piano for sure, but sitting next to the II was this Bechstein. I hadn't considered Bechstein, I assumed it was out of my price range.

After playing the Bechstein, I was hooked. What else did I need? A piano I liked at a price I could swing. After all my traveling, I ended up finding a great piano thirty minutes from home.

So fast-forward to 2005. I came across an ad for a Mason & Hamlin CC2 locally, listed at a fire-sale price. I wasn't shopping for another piano, and was hesitant to even look at it--I assumed the worst from the low price.

Long story short, the was nothing underhanded going on. The sellers were just really motivated to sell, I thought piano was great, and my piano tech approved of its condition. It was such a good deal, I couldn't pass it up, even though it's a tight fit in my house.

I don't have any recordings worth sharing, it's really hard to make a good recording of the pianos that illustrate their differences, even though they sound nothing alike in person. All you can really tell from my recordings is if the piano is in tune or not.

David, the arrangement of the pianos is far from ideal but the best compromise I came up with--it's the only way to get them both in my space AND be able to live there too.

The excitement of newness still surrounds the Mason & Hamlin, so I'm playing that one mostly now anyway...I've had ten years to play the other.

I came to my decision by shopping around, and playing alot of pianos. I had such a blast shopping. It was so much fun. There were alot of pianos that I liked, but this one really stood out for me. I loved the sound, the tone, and the touch. I was really impressed with the quality of the piano, and how much I was getting for the price. So needless to say, I bought it, and I've been exremely happy with it.

Beautiful Piano. What did you think of the way it sounded inside your house for the first time. I think that's one of the biggest thrills.

I absolutely love the tone, touch and everything about this piano. I've tried playing on a Kawai, Yamaha C1, Petrof, Young Chang and I fell in love with this one. I honestly feel that the piano is underpriced with the quality that was placed on the production. It's price is half of a C3 Yamaha which sounds quite similar.

Please note the heating vent in the corner, on the floor. You might consider putting a small piece of metal in the half facing the camera, to avoid any direct airflow.

These vents can cause trouble for grands: they blow right up at the soundboard from underneath.

What kind of wood veneer is that on that beautiful old piano?

The veneer sort of looks similar to this old Asherberg upright made in Dresden around the turn of the last century...which I believe is a walnut root veneer very popular in Germany at that time for piano cases.

This 1925 Bechstein also has a similar wood grain. I just love the way this piano looks. PF member owns this if I remember correctly.

Your piano is definitely not mahoghany. It is I believe the walnut tree root veneer I mentioned above and provided pictures of other German made pianos with the same veneer.

If you are asking about the Bechstein finish,...I would suspect that it is a polyester finish...as it has been most likely completely redone...since 1925. The piano belongs to someone on the Forum...so maybe they will notice it and give you the correct answer.

Tenuki, your nordiska master series looks really nice. I have been trying to get some imput from other people who have bought this and other Nordiska grands. How is your piano doing these days, any problems and do you still like the sound.

Mazer - thanks for putting my pics right on here - and the legs each have two wheels that are rubber coated so the floors are doing fine (not that a few extra scratches would show )

Our son has never played any instrument until about 9 months ago when he became passionate about playing the piano and listening to classical music. He was 11 at that time and heard his cousin playing Chopsticks and Happy Birthday on their piano (August 2005). We got him a Yamaha electronic keyboard the next month and in about two months he started learning to play pieces by Mozart and Beethoven (mostly by ear). About that time (Nov. 2005) we traded in the keyboard for a Yamaha P120 digital piano and also found him a piano teacher. My wife and I were amazed at his quick progress. His Russian teacher was amazed as well.

We looked to upgrade his P120 to a Clavinova (CLP-series) and so we had him come with us to the showroom were he could try the different Clavinovas. After playing the Clavinovas and some of the acoustic pianos on display he fell in love with some of the acoustic pianos (we only budgeted for a Clavinova!) He liked the Estonia baby grand the most but also liked the sound of the U1 (well also the Vogel upright, the Schimmel baby grand, ... etc). Not only were the prices out of our budget but we didn't have a good enough space for a grand.

After reading a lot of good things about the U1 here on these forums and going over Fine's Piano Book and the 2005-2006 supplement we finally decided to purchase the U1 last April. Our son is very happy with his new piano and continues to do well. Because of our son's passion, my wife and I have learned a lot about pianos these past few months.

Sorry for the long answer! We are just proud parents.

In response to queries for pictures from sophial and mamma2my3sons about my room setup, here is a dark & blurry (sorry :rolleyes: ) and spliced picture of my 1913 Mason & Hamlin "A"

That's a 4-poster bed in the foreground, if you are wondering! There are sliding "pocket" doors which close the bedroom from the music room.

And here's a photo of my clavichord and custom-made bookcase, finished to match the piano. It was actually made for another house, and here looks a bit out of place (especially with the junk on top :rolleyes: ):

The bay window was a northern exposure - no sun on the piano.

Lacking photos of my new house (which looks just like the old one!) these are photos of my previous residence. The main difference is that now I have a 3-manual organ instead of the fireplace, and the room in the foreground is a 2nd parlor instead of a bedroom. Now I have to walk through several rooms to get to bed - no more falling directly into bed after practicing!

My new baby was delivered today! It's a Schimmel 189 in Macassar wood. I'm in love!

Gorgeous! Macassar is a kind of ebony, which, surprisingly, isn't all black. I've heard that in Africa, locals who sell carvings to tourists use black shoe polish to make it look like what they expect!

I can't help sending a picture of my Yamaha C3. I'm still not too sure if there is room enough for the Sauter Omega that I'm still dreaming of?

As you can see it from the enclosed images here the oriental carpet has been replaced by a nice little dog. This might be the new trend among piano lovers. However what "brand" of dog should you choose for a grand piano?

J. A. Mose...nice Yam, concerning your carpet...we chose a white westie to put under our satin ebony M&H. I really like the contrast of the black and white. Sometimes when I play though, I get a barking sound and it doesn't really seem to be present in any one particular piece.

Thanks, yes, it is quite something. I've been on happily spending hours on it since I've taken delivery.

The small R is actually a double RR, which stands for Sauter's double repetition action, similar to grand pianos. You can read about it here :

Both running through a Hartke KM200 (200 watt) amplifier.

Notice the AKG wireless headphones next to the keyboards, perfect for late night playing :-)

All patched through a Lexicon / Omega interface then via USB into the computer to run it through the Cubase multi-track recording software.

Beautiful ANIQUE Esotnia in an equally beautiful setting...

Knowing nothing baout pianos(here to post about buying one for my dd) I can still appreciate the beauty and workmanship of them. They are stunning! Perhaps it is my love of furniture that makes them appealing to me! You all have some beautiful instruments! I was sitting here with my mouth open in awe!!! Thanks for sharing!!!

My 2 month old Challen 50" upright in Mahogany high gloss finish.

Here are a few photos of the 290. It was delivered over the summer, but I've only recently been able to take digital photos again. The room's windows are treated with a film which blocks out 50% visible light and 99.9% of the UV rays. The room faces northeast, so it never really gets direct sunlight. Everything is temperature and humidity controlled - I haven't noticed any fluctuations in tuning thus far.

Initially the piano was a bit bright in the room but after the first regulation, voicing and tuning it plays effortlessly and sounds incredible.

You have a lot of glass, besides the rug and drapes have you conditioned the room otherwise? Have you noticed and nasty resonance due to room acoustics?

Gene, I was definitely initially concerned with the glass factor. Before I had the windows treated I had spent some time playing soprano and tenor sax in the room. It was very live and high frequencies were accentuated. After the window film was applied most of the nasty resonant frequencies were tamed. I'm assuming the polycarbonate film dampened the glass. There was still an issue with reverberence. The drapes, rug and furniture have helped. The room is still a little live, but not in an objectionable way. More to the effect of a choir room.

My piano teacher is playing at Carnegie hall next year and he liked the sound of the room. Rich Galassini was over a few weeks ago, he can give you another opinion of the room acoustics.

Very interesting thread with lots of nice pictures! In a couple of years when me and my girlfriend buys a house there has to be room for my future grand piano!

But for now, to contrast saxguy's extravagant room and very beautiful Bösendorfer, here comes my modest digital piano in our 55m^2 (~592ft^2) apartment:

Quick question about the Bosendorfers.

Why are the extra bass keys black?

Its a visual/spatial orientation thing. Subconsciously, pianists 'intuit' their relationship to the keyboard by external cues, such as high "C" and low "A". When you start adding low notes, then it becomes less clear where middle "C" is. When you go to play a low note very quickly, you might find yourself disoriented, and play a wrong note.

Bösendorfer did the absolute right thing, by making the natural keytops black; this has the effect of masking off the area sufficiently, so that disorientation does not occur.

I've also seen some Bösendorfers with a little door that closes over the extra notes. It is of course, black (or probably finished in the same color as the case).

Notice the depressed keys on zrex's kawai, somebody is playing it...either a ghost or a piano player system ??

Bösendorfer also went so far as to place the logo where it "should" go, centered over the standard keyset.

This Sauter is sooooooo cool!

I think this is from the 1950s when fascination with a new thing called jets led to designers using the "Delta Wing" theme in everything from cars to clocks to coffee shops.

Agathis, I don't quite understand the concept of a "digital grand". I understand that sometimes "digital guts" can be placed in a cabinet that resembles a small upright, and I understand the concept of how the technology works. But why would they create a digital grand? Is it for looks? Do they place all the "digital guts" in the "grand-shaped cabinet"? Does yours have a separate amp cabinet? How does it work? Just curious.

This beautiful little girl is playing a Yamaha YS200 which I just gave to her. Ahhhhhhhhhh to be young and in love ! Well in love with a keyboard anyway!

Greetings! I'm new to Piano World Forums. I've been reading your posts for about a week. Nay; salivating over some of the pictures you all have posted. I am particularly woo'ed by saxguy's Bosendorfer. :-)
I also saw a Schimmel upright that looks gorgeous too!
Right now I am piano-less*. I used to have a Tokai 6'1" and had to sell it recently. Yes. I said Tokai, not a brand I am sure most of you have heard of. A Yamaha clone made by disgruntled Yamaha employees on the other side of the mountain as I am told. While it wasn't anything spectactular it was unique soley because it was one of those rare names. There is quite an amusing story behind buying that piano too.
If people would like I do have some (not great) photos of it that we used to sell it and I'll post them if there is intrest!

*We won't talk about the Korg i5s keyboard I inherited.

You may not have any choice of piano placement in that room, but I am distressed to see the piano in a bay window (which way does the window face, by the way?) and sitting very close to what appears to be a hot air register. Both the light and heat from the window and the air from the register have the potential for doing serious damage to your piano.

Usually the curtains were drawn as the house sat facing South. The heat was seldom on and for the first while I did notice that the tone was getting a little bright because of it. I ended up shunting that heating vent and got a humidifier nearby and all was well ever after.

I'll actually be devoting a room for my next grand in my future house to avoid such issues.

But that's about all that really counts.

little, just wanted to say wow, what a beautiful Kawai K5! really really stunning looking. Jessica T., a digital baby grand is just a small grand piano cabinet with digital guts like you mentioned. i really like mine although its not the real thing. oh, the speakers, yeah, theres just more amplification, (70x2) and speakers, 6... also has 32 track sequencer, hard drive, vocal processor and you can tweak literally everything. it's a bit much but lots of fun for the whole family. thanks for asking!

The past tense applies to the Bechstein A and Steinway B, which I recently sold. The Mason CC2, Estonia 190 Bubinga and the Kawai CP 175 are my current collection. At some point, even a bachelor can run out of room for all these pianos, although it did break my heart to part with the Bech and Stein. Suffice it to say that I am elated with the instruments that remain, however.
