Why am I hearing guitar (or, guitar-like) sounds when I would assume that the player is supposed to be demonstrating piano sounds? Or, did he push the wrong preset button?

What does this sound like... to you?

@kapelli,

The "Demo 2" in your link for the Thomann DP-25 sounds like an acoustic upright piano and isn't really too bad at that. Demo 5, the Chopin waltz, sounds a little better as it is probably a grand piano simulation.

Looks like you can't expect a lot of quality sounds from a digital in this price range.

Extra note:

What does anyone else think of the piano sound being demonstrated here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1a53Ng0sNA

It isn't supposed to be a "guitar" preset that he is playing although the piano sounds very peculiar indeed.

Is it the quality of the recording itself that lends an odd effect to the piano sound?

It's hard to say sometimes - recording quality and music itself changes a lot. Also the guy is talking all the time. But yes, even these few beggining notes sound horrible. But, listen to how this guy is talking - this is not even talk to anybody who has basic music background, but to the complete noobs which want something to push they fingers into sometimes and to take the soung from it.

Yeah, the woman is much better for it smile

If you want a piano, we know what to buy.

And yes, it doesn't not sound like piano at all.

This piano sound like harp not like piano...http://www.thomann.de/pl/hemingway_dp201_at.htm

Demo 6

He doesn't stop talking long enough to really hear the sound clearly.. and why does he call it "the most affordable real piano you'll find on the market today"? Anyway - here a demo where you can hear the sound more clearly...

Thanks for the demo link as it looks like everything you want to know about Adagio pianos can be found here including the demo links:

http://www.adagiopianos.com/

I have heard it said somewhere that the least desirable off-brand digitals tend to have guitar-like piano sounds although I can't seem to find where I originally read that. Still looking for the info.

Anyway, it's something to keep in mind and look out for when shopping for a lower priced digital.

So, are there digital pianos that sound more like a guitar?

Here is where I found it said that the Williams "Rhapsody" (the less expensive model compared with the "Overture") sounds like a "guitar"...

http://azpianonews.blogspot.com/2013/03/williams-rhapsody-digital-piano-review-not-recommended.html

And, this is the direct quote:

"I do not recommend the Williams Rhapsody because it simply sounds and plays bad as a piano in my opinion and it doesn't reach even minimum standards of piano playing and reproduction. Although the keys are weighted and certainly feel more like a piano than a keyboard does, the acoustic piano tones themselves sound very bright and more like a guitar than a piano, and the volume sensitivity and dynamic range of these piano tones almost sound as if there isn't any dynamics and volume changes at all when pressing on the keys."

This means that our friend Gyro would do better playing guitar concertos on his Williams Overture instead of piano concertos. Or, at least the sounds would match.

Gyro, are you there?

There are enough good choices in the sub-$1000 range among the "big boys" (Casio, Yamaha, etc.... no reason to go with one of off-brands. Are these Adagios and Williams "stencil" DPs or do they actually design and make their own?

pv: You're not seriously looking at bottom-of-the-line pianos, what, with your collection of high-end goods? Please say it isn't so!

I am not at all interested in buying anything else right now (as I have a CLP-480 on the way and will review it when it arrives) although there are many lower end digitals that do appear to have a primary piano/quasi-guitar-like sound in them.

Gyro has chosen the Williams and heartily endorses it. I also happen to like guitar sounds in a digital but I want to play them in a separate preset from the primary grand piano sound.

Does anyone else hear guitar (or, something else) in the Adagio KDP-88 video, above?

Good catch. It is a bit guitar-ish. Very plinky, and not very piano-ish.

Okay, thanks for that. As I agree and I am not intending to be critical of any particular brand/model, etc. They are what they are.
