So, I'm interested in trying out PianoTeq. I have a Yamaha p-105B and a mac, with of course garageband and mainstage. Question: There are a lot of controls available on Mainstage, and it looks like on PianoTeq as well, that want to be mapped to a controller, and the p-105b doesn't have mappable controls. So, if I want to do this, do I need something else? And if so, what? Many thanks!

Mark VC, you can download a trial version (limited to 20 minutes per session, with some notes disabled) from the Pianoteq website. The software can run as a plugin, or in standalone mode.

My recommendation would be to try the software in standalone mode first, as this offers the most straightforward 'out of the box' experience. Play with the preset sounds (of which there are many), then perhaps try experimenting with the controls. The interface is quite detailed, with lots of different parameters to adjust, however everything is easily controlled from your mouse.

Cheers,
James

Expounding on what James said... Just because you can map virtual (on screen) controls to physical ones, that doesn't mean you have to. But if and when you want to, just add a MIDI control surface with knobs/buttons/sliders and map away. Korg NanoKontrol, Berhinger BCF2000/BCR2000, Novation Zero SL MK II are some possibilities.

with pianoteq you can play right of the box, no need to "turn" knobs too much if you don't want to.
I use to play it with basic midi keyboard without any extra controls.
