I'm brand new to the world of digital keyboards but have been thinking of buying one for years - finally bit the bullet and bought a Casio PX 130 at a Guitar Center but forgot to ask the salesperson if I can upload samples into this model (the manuel is VERY vague about this).

Another alternative would be - can I transfer a piece from the keyboard to my computer (I have the Garageband software) and re-assign say, the piano sound to another instrument? Can I play the keyboard but have the sound generated through the computer?

Sorry these are probably such uninformed questions - but I really have a lot to learn about this stuff. I'm thinking of exchanging the PX-130 for a PX 330 but other than having a bigger sample library I don't need most of the bells and whistles on that model

Thanks! And if anyone has links to sites with good info for those new to digital keyboards, please post them!

If you have a Mac then you have all those "bells and Whistles" already. You can do recording and editing and play dozens of instrument sounds using only a very basic keyboard. The px130 connects with a USB cable. You should already have the software.

MIDI can be sent from the px130 to be converted to a sound on the computer and assigned to any software instrument. Also the midi data can be sent back to the px130. I think there are some limitations in Garage Band. Logic lets you do a bit more with MIDI.

But no, you can't load your own samples to the keyboard but you can use the px130 to trigger samples on the computer.

Most digital pianos can't be sent new samples to use.
Transferring samples over midi takes for EVER...
(pretty slow data rate)

Your best bet is to get a pc soundcard that'll support this.
Creative Soundblaster Audigy or something.

Or else a software sound synthesizer of some sort.
