Basically, I know that if you want to play jazz music you could start by learning the most common chords they use in that genre. If you want to play classical music, your best bet is to improve the dexterity of your fingers and whatnot. I'm oversimplifying this, of course, but is it not true that this kind of specific advice can be given to people who are interested in playing some specific genre of music?

I happen to like music from anime, games and films.

I guess the main characteristic of this music is an active bass part and a fast and upbeat melody. Is this considered a genre? Or rather, is it close to some kind of existing genre like ragtime or something? If so, how could I improve my piano skills in order to play such music better? Thanks!

From what I know about genres, you can create your own identity/adjective. Maybe you could come up with something catchy that sticks.

Genre of the music you provided is Anime soundtrack music or Anime theme music. They are basically background music for animations, games, and etc.

A long time ago, record companies slotted music in categories to help sales. Call your music what you wish.

I disagree.

Genres have much to do with styles of music and where they originated from. Although genres overlap, they all fall into different categories.

To say you can call whatever genre you wish is like saying call Beethoven's 9th Symphony a 12 Bar-Blues music.

Folk Music is passed down from generation to generation very specific to the region, so this genre is Folk Music. This genre can not be categorized under Alternative Rock for example.
