the pedal is functional, (Mason Hamlin AA), but the brass is literally broken off (picture a jagged edged chunk broken off). Is this cosmetic and/or a big, costly deal to repair?

I'm considering purchasing this older piano.

Piano supply houses off a selection of pedal sets that can be matched to the Mason. It might not be exact but with proper installation they will do well. Have a technician measure the proper size and he or she can show you the catalog of different sets. They will have to purchase a set as the supplier does not sell separate pedals. Also, it would be a good time to repair the worn pedal bushings and any other components in the pedal box. I recently purchased a 1931 Mason Hamlin AA that I will be restoring. In it's current all original state it sounds warm and rich but the action/touch is worn and needs to be restored.

I had the broken pedal from one of my pianos brazed. The repair is hardly noticeable and only when you make a point of looking for it. Simpler and cheaper than replacing both pedals.

I too had a pedal brazed for a customer. It cost very little to get done and saved the customer a sizeable expense. The repair is hardly noticable.
