Yup, this is the summer recital season again.

My son asked me to post his recital video on YouTube so his friends can see it. A couple days later, I got an alert from YouTube, saying "your video matches copyrighted material".

I was offered some options:
* take it down
* mute the sound
* place ads and share revenue
* dispute

Can you not see it is an amateur video taken with a cell phone of a young boy who can barely reach the pedal?

I hesitated to post the video, as it was the most over and poorly played piece, Fur Elise. And If AZNPiano said it was given to him "way to early", I would agree. He barely played 2 years, and you can surely see the struggles.

Before I pressed the publish button, I did ask my son: "Are you sure you want to show people this? You know Beethoven has a bad temper, don't you?". His reply was quick : "Beethoven is deaf, and he doesn't watch youbute"

So I pressed the button.

I smiled when I saw the message, I know, it is probably some automated scanning system that would err on false positive. But at least the Google system thought it was closed to some "copyrighted material". That made my day!

RE: the youtube thing, they have this software that identifies the music and if it sounds like something else out there it gets flagged. Dispute it as being public domain music and you'll be fine.

Your son is very cute! Let the Beethoven go for about 10 years and and see what he can do with it then! smile

Of course I disputed! I just had to click dispute and pick a reason, saying the piece is in public domain.

I do enjoy your posts, and we all know that you don't teach Fur Elise, and you are not alone.

This is just a parent celebrating yet another mile stone of the journey, feel free to skip.
