I've been trying to figure it out for a while. It's not coming to me. I guarantee someone will know this.

Depends on how accurately you played it - could it possibly be La fille aux cheveux de lin (Debussy preludes bk1) ?

Nope, definitely not that! I don't know how you came up with that. grin

But really, I suspect it is Debussy. This is driving me crazy.

OK -- maybe The Girl with the Flaxen Hair? grin

But seriously folks.... ha ....that occurred to me too. It didn't sound like it was exactly it, but the same melodic figure.

Hence, as Curra said:

I'm thinking late Liszt. That kind of repetitive pattern with the augmented chords would be very much like one of his late works along the lines of Berceuse or Lugubre Gondola.

Well, I wonder if there is a hint in the URL …. puck.

It's not Debussy's Dance de Puck, and it's not Grieg's Lyric Piece version either. Who else wrote about the nasty little sprite, and wrote it lento?

Where did you find this recording? If anything, post a comment to the person who posted this and they should be able to tell you.

He probably is playing it by ear and doesn't know where he heard it.

Let's see what Mark and his Dictionary of Musical Themes say. grin

In that case, where was the source you heard it from, JoelW? Is it possible it is a modern composition, perhaps written specifically for whatever context you heard it in?

I tried it on Sound Hound just for kicks and it found no matches (not surprising).

That is correct.

Also, I figured it out while I was half-awake this morning.

So just to be precise, that is the Impromptu from Three Little Oddities.

Aside from the novelty piano pieces there is a lot of nice stuff that he wrote, much of which makes good study material. Fortunately, pretty much his complete works been published in one volume from Belwin Mills. It might still be available somewhere.
