My appointment at Adelphi University is on march 7th, for my audition. I told them I was planning on majoring in composition and theory, and they asked what I'd be auditioning on and of course I said piano.
Unfortunalety I don't quite know what it is that Im auditioning, becuase Im not there to audition for performance. I was planning on brining compositions, but as for what to play I dont quite know.
Should I prepare a sonata or an etude or what?
I was planning on doing NYSSMA lv.6 this year also and I was going to do Chopin's first ballade, althought I know this is one heck of an overplayed audition piece.
any ideas?

The Adelphi web site says this: Composers will be asked to present and discuss a small portfolio of printed or manuscript scores of their works (preferably with recording of at least one of those works). Composers may also offer to perform one of their own works, of which a score must be available. Thus, I would expect them to want you to perform one of your compositions. Since they also seem to be interested in your musicianship, I would have one or two other pieces prepared. Ed

Re/ NYSSMA, go for it. I grew up in NY and did NYSSMA a bunch of times. Unless its changed since the mid 90s, it doesn't really count for anything - so what difference does it make whether or not the piece in question is overplayed. Stress the audition, but don't stress NYSSMA - have fun with it...
What you are is an accident of birth. What I am, I am through my own efforts. There have been a thousand princes and there will be a thousand more. There is one Beethoven.

Dohnanyi Etude No.4 seems like the perfect audition piece. Extremely melodic, very very technically impressive (harder then almost any Chopin Etude... And more impressive then most) and it is not well known at all. Instead of playing a warhorse... I think you should check this out
Currently working on Prokofiev Piano Concerto 3 Beethoven Sonata Op.109 Chopin Op.10 No.1 Bach WTC II no. 15

any ideas? Yes, I have an idea. Contact Adelphi (again?) and tell them that you are unclear about what you will be expected to perform for the audition given that you are "planning on majoring in composition and theory." Why accept our guesses? Regards,
