The problem with reading is that it means I have to read! I do like to read, but... I'm currently working my way through Rosen's "Short Companion to the Beethoven Sonatas" and Clough, Conley, and Boge's "Scales, Intervals, Keys, Triads, Rhythm and Meter: A Programmed Course in Elementary Music Theory, with an Introduction to Partwriting." Meanwhile, Rosen's "The Classical Style: Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn" is waiting patiently on my shelf, and Rosen's "The Romantic Generation" (710 pages!) just arrived in the mail today. Plus, in 6 weeks, I'll begin reading all of those fat college textbooks... *sigh* But all in good fun! And Tovey's "Bar-by-bar analysis" of the Beethoven sonatas is coming soon also. But I don't think I'd read that one cover to cover - just the relevant sections. I'm quite liking what I AM reading... anybody else like these books? Will the "Romantic Generation" book be worth the 710 pages of laborious study?

I just started reading the Shostakovich memoirs "Testimony" which so far Im guessing is going to be all about the effects on the musical society of 20th century Russia under the opression of Stalin. (Good fun, can't wait )

I heard that book, "Testimony", stirred a lot of controversy. About what? I don't remember, and I probably never knew much about it to begin with!

Good books!
I read "The Romantic Generation" in March, and it's full of great stuff. I thought the sections on Schumann and Chopin were particularly outstanding, but Rosen pretty much hits every nail on the head.

The only book I've read which is slightly musical orientated, is a biography of Jaqueline de Pré, the cellist, by her brother and sister, Hilary and Piers. It sort of fell into the category of "mad musicians", if you ask me...
But that book about Shostakovich sounds very good! I really wonder if it'll be available in South Africa.
Anyway, good luck Sam, with all the reading work - you're not alone, bro!

Hey Ronel, did you see the movie "Hilary and Jackie"? It's a Hollywoodized version of the book by Hilary and Piers.
The actor who played Barenboim really does look like Barenboim! Amazing.
(Oh, and I absolutely love the Elgar Concerto that opens the film... so beautiful...)

(Oh, and I absolutely love the Elgar Concerto that opens the film... so beautiful...) How could I miss it? Anyway, the only bit I didn't like, was where Jackie slept with Hilary's husband - weird family! But I must say, I read the book before the movie, and the book is much better! And there's of course also more about Piers in the book. But the Elgar Concerto really speaks to my soul... and her recording! *sigh*
