A friend of mine owns a home that is 110 years old. He recently met someone who lived in the home at one time, many years ago, and that person asked him if the "wall piano" was still there when my friend bought the house. We are wondering...what is a "wall piano"? Is it simply an alcove built into the house that maybe an old upright sat in?? Or is it something specific? I have never heard of this and we are interested in possibly restoring that feature in the home. We would appreciate greatly any info anyone has to share on this topic!!

It could just be what that person calls an upright piano.

I'm sorry... But the header reminded me of this video.

I wish I could do that to one of my walls...

But it was this;

From page 23 of Downright Upright by Wayne Kelly;

………After all, the 1854 Daniel Hewitt design “whereby the strings were attached to the wall of the house to save the expense of the piano frame” had met relative success in Britain.

The quote is from another publication by Cyril Ehrlich, The Piano: A history (J. M. Dent & Sons, London England, 1976 pg 140.)

Gives new meaning to "house of music" or " wall of sound". Bring in the musical chairs.

"Imagine it in all its primatic colorings, its counterpart in our souls - our souls that are great pianos whose strings, of honey and of steel, the divisions of the rainbow set twanging, loosing on the air great novels of adventure!" - William Carlos Williams
