I'm 51 so I'm raising the average a bit.

If I could get my piano-playing husband to become a PWF member, he'd lower the average as he celebrated his 15th birthday last February . . . on the 29th, of course!

I'm 48.

I think that the other variables here that may explain the large numbers of us in the 40s/50s are

1) those of us firmly planted in middle age are at a stage of our lives that, if we have children, they are either grown and out of the house, or at least old enough to amuse themselves much of the time; and

2) we are pretty settled in our careers, for the most part, so we have a little more leisure time.

I'm supposedly 18, but to be honest I feel mentally and physicall in the triple digits somewhere, and I've always wanted to be old for some reason, it seems more dignified.

Hmmm. Well, don't take this the wrong way (since at 48 I'm not a youngster here), but older people ALWAYS think they're so smart (uh, that goes for me too)...

I'd suggest another possibility.

PANIC!

Okay, I'm being melodramatic, but with age often comes the growing recognition that we're getting older ;-)

And that we only have so much time to do the things we want to do, and be the people we want to be.

I remember in the 1960's & 70's...the year 2000 seemed light years away. I just couldn't imagine ever being 40 years old. In fact, I still have trouble with it and I'm fast approaching 50.

Older people used to say to me "The years fly by...they go by so much faster as you get older" and, of course, I thought that was a stupid thing to say at the time, because after all a day is a day, and a year is a year...

It reminds me of that Joni Mitchell song (think it is "Seasons"? or "Circles") ...anyway Wagner, as Joni Mitchell might say..."it won't be long before you drag your feet to slow the circles down."

43 and restarting lessons in June, with piano due to arrive end of May.

24 here....just started self teaching monday, playing for a week tomorrow

have wanted to play since i was a kid, just never did.....between jobs right now so decided it was as good a time to start as ever, i have alot more self discipline, drive 'n am more goal oriented these days...the time just seemed right....now if my left hand will just agree and get with the program i'll be set! hahaa....

I'll help raise the average. I'm 61, near 62.

What interested me was the number of people who stopped, then resumed play. I started at about 11 or 12, then stopped at about 14. I wasn't practicing, so why continue going to lessons?

Started again at 31, then stopped again at about 34, without lessons. I realized that I would never get to where I wanted to be without a great deal of additional time, which I didn't have or prefer to spend.

Started again at 60, got a teacher at 61. Decided to take one last shot at getting to where I wanted to be (competent at playing and improvising popular tunes, at the level of a good lounge player).

We'll see.
