Hi,

I was wondering what a reasonable price range would be for a less than 1 year old ebony Petrof IV be? Thanks.

From a dealer or from a private transaction? In which part of the Earth do you reside?

These things can make a difference.

In the NYC area they run about $15k new.

Why would that make a difference? And what would the difference be? Its a private sale but should one expect to pay more if from dealer?

A piano which is that recent (have you checked the serial number?) from a dealer may come with a warranty, free delivery, tuning etc. So yes, it will likely be more at a dealer, and you'd have to decide if all that value-added is worth it.

I don't know what the % or dollar difference should be, but most would agree that given the same item, you'd probably pay more at a dealer and you would hope to get peace of mind out of dealing with a reputable dealer, so paying extra is worth it. (I was just there, in this situation, and I chose the dealer over a private purchase)

So what is the depreciation- is it like a luxury automobile, 20% as soon it is driven off the lot? THanks.

I'd be wondering why this piano is up for sale so soon if it's only a year old.

Perhaps you'd better have it carefully checked out before plunking down your hard earned money.

I hope others chime in on this so you have more than one point of view....

I'm not an expert on piano pricing and even for experts this is a tough question. Taking your specific example, a "like new" readily available (depending where you are, I don;t know where you live so this may be moot) piano with no warranty from a private seller had better be heavily discounted from a new one with warranty from a dealer. At his price range 20% less than a new one would not make me buy the used one. So a piano that costs $15k new with warranty will sell for $12k with no warranty privately? I'd go for the new one.

20% may be a good industry estimate though.

I think that I would come to the same conclusion as Christopher unless there was something very unique or special about the used Petrof compared to the new ones that are available. From what I hear, that certainly is a plausible scenario with Petrof.

Yes, of course. Good point. My whole argument is based upon the assumption that the two pianos in question are nearly identical in all respects.
