I've been trying not to stress over this one help

Due to a waiting list full of great students that I really want to work with, I have decided to open up another day for teaching. Long story short...I now teach 60 lessons a week and am worried about makeup lessons. I will have literally no time for makeups aside from 9:00 at night or 6:00 in the morning (I allow makeups with 48 hours notice, for the record).

Does anyone here use the "parents calling/emailing each other" list for makeups? What are the good and bad things about it? It makes perfect sense for when a student is away for a day, but what about when they go on vacation for 2 weeks?

For those of you who use this, please advise me on tips/traps/solutions

Thanks all?

Well, I tried instituting this last year, but no one really took advantage of it, and I didn't really stress it. This year, however, I will be stressing it more. They have to make such changes no less than 48 hours before the lesson so that the student being asked to swap will not feel infringed upon. They do not have an obligation to swap with a student, either. The student requesting the swap must notify me of the swap no less than 24 hours before the lesson so I can plan my day accordingly. Right now I have no limits on the number of swaps one can do, but I mention that if there are excessive swaps, then a permanent change may be in order.

Also, I have designated make-up days set aside: For students who have Monday lessons, they will make up Labor Day on the Monday the week of Thanksgiving. That day is also used for any other make-ups needed. I do not teach regular lessons during that week, so Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday can be used for make-ups. You're in Canada, so I know your holidays are different, but you could devise something similar. I also do this for the weeks of Christmas and New Year's, weeks that I do not have regularly scheduled lessons, so that students can make up lesson then. There are other holidays or days that the schools have off (like teacher conference or in-service days) that I will not observe in my studio, otherwise it would be a mess to make up all those lessons! I also explain that in my policy so that they understand that they will have their normal lesson time on those days, and if they want to go away for the weekend, they'd have to lesson swap or miss that lesson, or use their one make up lesson per semester.

These designated make up days worked out great last year because then I didn't have to change my schedule at all when someone had to cancel, I would just say, OK, we'll make that up on such-and-such a date and schedule it at that time.

First off, I would limit the make-ups per semester to two if possible. With 60 students, you will likely get at least two requests per week, and maybe more. That will get old fast!

Since you are allowing makeups, find a time (like 6 AM Saturday morning) that is undesirable. I've never tried a swap list, but it's worth a try.
