I have the opportunity to buy a 1981 Yamaha G3 for $7500 or a Kawai GS30 for $9500. This will be my first time buying a piano, and I could use guidance choosing between the two in terms of value for the price. Thanks for the help!

I purchased a '81 Kawai GS30. A few years ago for $7,300 (L.A. area). But mine had some noticeable
gauges on the fallboard.

I'm very happy with the sound and it has givin me no problems. It holds a tune very well per my tuner.

I have the GS 50, which I purchased 20 years ago. It has a marvelous tone, and keeps in tune beautifully. The Kawai GS series (Grand Supreme), was a special edition.,with a lot of extra features. I had it voiced recently, and the sound is just magnificent--rich bass, and clear treble. Gaby Tu

Hi, I'm subliminally hijacking this topic, but, it is related! Can people please give me opinions about yamaha G3's, and if more specific, an early 70's one, just like problems, or anything that seems to be wrong with them, as experienced over time. Positives and Negatives.

Amount of wear and overall condition should account for anything that might be "wrong"--a solidly built piano to start with, but so was I 35 years ago...

Hijack on a Hijack on a Highjack laugh I'm guilty at times myself.
The GS30 is the superior piano over the G3 in my opinion though they are much different. The GS30 quality/spec wise would really be more comparable to the C3.The G3 would maybe be more comparable to the Kawai KG3.
Now as for asking prices,I think the GS30 is a bit high but if really in pristine cond. could justify the asking price. It's hard to say. Depends on the crustiness factor.
A brand new Hailun 178 or 198 is something you might wanna consider at not that much more $ Good luck.!
