Okay everyone, here it is. This is the first draft, so please let me know if you find any errors, typographical or otherwise. Enjoy! http://www.box.net/shared/8o5ix8rggw

I like it.
It's a handy guide for students to have around the piano.

from the movie "Wall Street," speed is good!
Italicize Wall Street, not quotes Use a colon instead of a comma Use the quotation marks for "Speed is good!"
still checking...

Thank you for that. I think I would have preferred passages from the literature. A kind of 'Scales of the Masters' book. Any takers?

Jason, excellent work. Of course, you know we're all going to steal it and use it in our teaching!
I think Siciliano should be capitalized, but I'm not an English major, so double check on this.

Gerg raises a good question and one that I can't seem to answer for myself yet.
It could be for teachers. It could be for advanced students. If for students, it could be for 12 year olds, 16 year olds, 20 year olds, or 40 year olds.
Any ideas - what audience might benefit most? Would you rather have it as a resource guide for teachers, or as something you could print out for your students?

Kreisler,
Is it OK to invent whatever fingering works?
I'm uncomfortable not having a fingering plan going into it. Do you recommend writing one in, or is the purpose to think on your feet based on what you know?
I don't think you can assume that all students would be able to follow these based on having learned fingering in lessons or on their own.
I printed the scales and will do them this week, rhythmically they present no challenge, the dynamic control does challenge.
I'm going with the expectation of them being sightreadable with dynamics and direction at a steady beat.
I like that you wrote about articulation here, but I think more could be said. (Touch, attack, release, types of accents).
This is part of what makes me think this is meant as a warmup for performance majors and performing pianists.
I think it might be helpful if you numbered the exercises. Can I suggest that you consider providing a tetrachord pattern with 5-4-3-2-2-3-4-5 fingering so that "we" can move these to other keys quickly. (Choices: moving chromatically (12 keys) or moving according to Circle of 5th. (An exercise in tranposing.)
I didn't notice any contrary motion chromatic, which I think is very useful. (D mirrored and Ab mirrored.)
It's a good looking draft. Do you mean for it to be used by other teachers, or will you be marketing it?
Thank you!
Betty

Kreisler,
I was hoping for an answer to "Is it OK to invent whatever fingering works?"
When I read through it on the piano, my RH would take on fingering I wouldn't have thought of: 1234123454 - somehow my fingers calculate the total distance and turn arounds and they are not the one's I would use from having undergood scale training in the traditional way. Also, my RH thought of starting on a 2 finger on some. I am not thinking this should happening, my hand just touches the keys and goes. Somehow there is a calculation going on without my presence, and it likes to invent it rather than follow what I would do if following the "rules".
I will try in a few days again and see what happens, it was very hard to get my fingers to do 123,1234,etc....they kept tangling up and stopping.
I think I am dependant on seeing a finger number on the music which which to refer to and "obey".
The reason why you left fingering not indicated is ......?

I can't answer for Kreisler but if you read the introduction he says that the guide assumes you know the fingering for the first octave. There's then an exercise to help you expand to the second octave. I take it that this guide is about ways of practising scales, not how to learn them. Correct me if necessary, Kreisler

Currawong is right. I worked a bit on the introductory guide today and should have it ready by the weekend.

I just downloaded it. I'll try it out on a 15 year old I happen to know. At this late age he's now beginning to get them down in their entirety.
