I have played the piano for twenty years, and taught several students along the way. I'm considering taking on a new student, who I fear may be my biggest challenge yet - MY WIFE!

She is a pretty good violinist, took a few piano lessons a number of years ago, and enjoys figuring things out on the piano by ear (all in the keys of C major or A minor of course).

With her background, I'm afraid that most of the beginner adult method books would be too basic, and she'd simply skip right through the easy parts and maybe miss things and valuable practice along the way. She mainly needs to learn the bass clef and get over her fear of the black keys. Can anyone recommend a good method book for her? I can always suplement it with other materials, and would appreciate guidance on that as well. Is there a book out there specifically for transitioning from a treble clef instrument such as violin to piano?

"I Used to Play Piano" was recommended to me. Any thoughts on that for someone with her background?

Thanks,

There's nothing that I know of which does this. Maybe try Francis Clark's Keyboard for the Adult Beginner (I think that's the name). It assumes that you know a little about reading music to begin with, so she won't have to struggle too much. Also, it teaches intervallic reading which she might find easier to apply to playing in bass clef.

If she is a musician then Louise Guhl's "Keyboard Proficiency" might be the ticket. I did a write-up on my experience somewhere in the teacher forum, "Another kind of method" or similar title. It is designed for musicians learning another instrument and assumes a fair bit of knowledge, works more deeply etc.

Although I transistioned from clarinet to piano when I was a teenager (at 15, I'll be 30 end of this month) and still play/teach both instruments, I remember using the Alfred Adult method, which I got through the first two books in well under two years. I was a good clarinetist at the time (playing in high level bands and orchestras)and found that just needed to adjust to reading bass clef notes, which now I do very easily, even the extremely low bass clef notes. I have long been able to read low treble clef notes easily, since some the clarinet's first notes learned by students are below written middle C.

My experience on clarinet influences my piano teaching, not only do I do a lot of ensemble playing in the form of four-hand piano duets, I have some of my piano students assist with turning pages in my concerts and the concerts my clarinet students participate in. Even some of the method book pieces I use as ensemble training, the Camptown Races in the Faber 2A books is fun to do with a solo instrument and piano (I transpose the part for clarinet students)
