I am looking for a book to teach my five-year-old daughter ear training at home since it is not covered by her half an hour weekly piano lessons. I know that Alfred publishes ear-training books for each level of its Alfred Basic Piano Course but I would like to hear some suggestions from the forum before I go to a local music store.

Hi

I don't know of any specific books ...but, I made a few games up that I started playing with my 6 year old when he was 5.

I play :-

First to ten (against daddy who always loses ;\) )

First play middle C...then I shut my eyes and he has to hit a note anywhere on the keyboard and I have to try and get it right if I miss no point for daddy

Then its his turn to play ...he plays middle C
shuts his eyes , I play a note, then he has to get as close as one note either side of my note and he gets a point.

These games can be developed upon ...its up to your imagination to think up new games...i.e. with intervals? ...or guess the melody notes? etc. etc.

All this is usually great fun especially as they will most times win!

Thanks for your input.

It is interesting. That's exactly what we have been playing at home. But I run out of ideas and thought I needed a book to teach her in a structured way. Her mom have some books but way too hard and BORING for a little girl.

Thanks for the link Ken...interesting I shall give it a try.

Also you can try and figure out simple nursery rhymes with her...songs like "twinkle, twinkle"..."this old man"(aka barney theme)and "London Bridge" etc.

You'll be surprised how working out simple songs can lead you and her to see the bigger picture ;\)
