I'd like to teach piano to earn some extra cash. I am working on grade 8 ABRSM at the moment myself, but dont have any teaching qualifications. Can I still teach? How much would I charge? Any advice gratefully received!

UK.
Katey, strictly speaking you don't have to have any formal qualifications to teach piano in the UK. It seems incredible but anyone can place an ad for private pupils regardless of their abilities and charge good money for it. I think ABRSM grade 8 is a good start but your ability to comunicate is also as important. Teaching is an artform in itself. I have known great performers who are terrible teachers and not so great ones who teach very well. After your grade 8 there are many possibilities available to you. The ABRSM do a teaching certificate course as well as diplomas where you can specialise in teaching. As for lesson fees you should charge the going rate for your area. In the Midlands it seems to be around 20 per hour for a newly qualified instrumental teacher but in London it may be more. If you charge too little you may be taking business away from other teachers in your area who will not appreciate it.
