I've heard this from people on more than one occasion. If someone came to you and said, "I've always wanted to play like Jerry Lee Lewis", and asked if you could teach piano to them, what is your reply? Excuse me for not following the style of Jerry Lee Lewis much, but what approach should people take in learning piano if they want to play like Jerry Lee Lewis?

I'm no expert, but I would say a lot of work with the blues scale and blues licks. I think a lot of ealry rock and roll music was based in the blues a lot.

Wait for someone more knowledgable though.

Teach them basic chord progressions I IV V and inversions, and the 12-bar blues pattern. It would be a lot of ear training work, because the tradition in most rock/jazz music is learning by ear. They may also want to be able to read lead sheet music, in which case they'd have to have a working knowledge of reading notes in addition to playing chords given things like "G/B" and "Am".

Really, I would have a student like this go trhough basic method books while working on learning a song (melody) by ear. Then as they progress they can add the chords and riffs.

Jerry Lee Lewis! Ahhhhhhhhhh! Right up there with Ray Charles and Fats Domino!

Okay, this is just fun to play music! But it can be very hard on you to play. Filled with a lot of octave playing, walking bass, and hard chord playing. The glissandos must most definitely be included!

Usually start with the skeleton of the piece, then listen to his recordings and copy and paste. Simple as that! Okay, maybe not totally that simple, but fun none the less.

Most importantly, you must learn how to properly kick over a piano bench! \:D

LOL :p

I think the important thing is when a student approaches you about this, is to relate to them that he didn't play that way without practice. Every great artist practices, no matter the genre. If you outline to a student exactly what they will learn and why, they may be more motivated to do some of the less 'fun' aspects of practice. I would use this as an opportunity to really get the student interested! I think a lot of times we just assign scales and chords and arpeggios and expect them to practice without really knowing why. Maybe that's fine for young students who might not graps the "why" very well, but for older kids, it may make the difference between success and dropping out of piano for something more "interesting".
